What happens after an elcs?

Hi,

I had an emergency c section with my daughter and was kept in hospital for 2 days before being allowed to go home (she came Monday early hours and we went home Wednesday). I'm just starting to get my hospital bag packed and realise I'm probably packing way too much stuff!

I wondered if anyone could shed any light on how long you typically stay in hospital after an elective? I appreciate that there will be exceptions and some will be in longer than others but just trying to get a rough idea.

I've also found out that my hospital no longer has private rooms. I assume this means I'll go on to the ward. How have others coped with picking up baby etc after the section? I'd kind of hoped DH might be there with me again overnight but now realise this is probably unlikely.

Thanks for any help. I realise I've only thought about the bit leading up to the elcs up to this point Smile

I met with the consultant to discuss options and she said that they like to just keep you in one night after an ELCS, assuming no complications.

After my EMCS, my DH wasn't allowed to stay over. I managed fine picking DD up from the cot, I did have my section at 8.30am though so by the time DH left at 9.30pm, I'd been back on my feet a few hours. Also, you can call the midwifes, they are there to help.

I've had 2 Elective sections. I was kept in the night of the op and discharged home the following morning on both occasions. They get you moving post op now within just a couple of hours and the catheter was removed as soon as I had feeling back in my legs.
I had my bags packed ready to go by 8am both times!

I was there for 2 nights with mine. I was on an open ward. My husband couldn’t stay. I managed absolutely fine. DD was born just after midday. Baby as next to my bed in a bassinet and it was easy to move her about. I made sure had nappies and things accessible to me on the other side

And picking up baby is fine. I had no issues at all, back walking around, driving and all usual activities within a couple of weeks. It helps to have a changing station so you don't have to bend down too much and my DH did a lot of baby picking up and carrying for the first 2 weeks. Honestly recovery was much quicker than after my first birth which was an episiotomy, that took weeks before o felt comfortable again.

Just to echo what everyone else has said that you'll be fine with the lifting. My partner wasn't allowed to stay after my emergency and I was in for two weeks post op (obvs very unusual). I had no problems at all with that side of things. Some great tips from Ubercornsdiscoball - the key is to be organised and have everything close at hand. You'll be fine. :)

I was in overnight and left early afternoon the next day.

I actually informed the MW I would be going home that day Grin she said I wasn't 'on the lust' but as I was up and about getting a drink, having a shower etc. I was clearly fine to do so & I think they're less cautious with second timers.

My ELCS was wonderful and much, much easier than EMCS because I wasn't as exhausted and I hadn't been through an emotional rollercoaster!

Good luck!

I was kept in for 4 days, 3 nights and had to go back on the 4th day 2 hours after being discharged due to their c*ckups. I'm going to ask my consultant about it this time as i really hated staying in and their constant mess ups. I was origonally told i could go home the next day last time xx

Thanks everyone - that's reassuring about the lifting and sounds like most likely a one night stay. I'd really like to get home as soon as possible as have DD at home. Plus I am less terrified of what to do with a newborn this time around!

Thanks for the advice on being organised - makes absolute sense.

Thank you x
