Asthma getting worse

Hi all,

Im currently 17 weeks, full of a cold and my asthma is getting worse. Has anyone else suffered with asthma at this stage? I have read it may get worse further down the line depending on how the baby sits in the womb etc, but nothing for this stage. I spoke to my Dr and he said I am fine taking my inhaler but feel like I'm having to take it more often. Im just a bit worried, will effect the baby?

I would contact your midwife hun or the see another doctor. I am sure your doctor is right but for your own peace of mind xx

I found my asthma was getting worse too and was taking my inhaler more. It's now eased off again (23 weeks). Speak to your gp - often they'll have asthma clinics where a nurse can assess whether your asthma is being managed properly and perhaps give you a different inhaler that's more effective.

I had a very bad chest infection at 16 weeks but thankfully since then it has settled down again and is fine for the most part! It won’t have any effect on baby unless you have a very serious accute episode and even then it is unlikely to. Sounds like you are just having a flare up due to a cold. Are you taking a steroid inhaler? You might need to consider upping your dosage or trying oral steroids until you improve.

Just going to add that if you contact your midwife she will say ‘speak to your gp’ or refer you to a consultant in the case of very severe asthma (which your gp would also do) as it really is not within the sphere of practise of a midwife.

Mine got worse in my last pregnancy. Seemed especially cruel seeing as I had quit smoking! I had to start taking a preventer for the first time in about 10 years. It's fine again now I've had the baby. Has it got worse in the past few weeks? Was thinking it could be hayfever related.

Yes I found mine was but possibly as I caught more bugs than usual and I think the winter air wasn't great.

Your immune system can be more over active so it might have an effect. I suppose it's worth seeing the asthma nurse and asking if you need to try more brown?

Pollen isn't a trigger for me so it's been better now I'm almost 40 weeks for a while simply due to the weather. Hormones can also be a factor causing more inflammation.
