Hi,

So today I got a call from the anti natal clinic saying my results are I. For my glucose tolerance test and it's come back after the sugary drink at 0.8 which is just over so I have pregnancy diabetes.

Anybody else have this and do I need to be really worried? Does this mean my baby's will be big or small?

Usually means you have a big baby as I was sent for a test because he was measuring two weeks ahead but he came out average size and I didn't have diabetes . They have found it so they will keep an eye on you so no need to panic x x

No need to be worried. They will ask you to control it through changing your diet and you'll be closely monitored - you are in good hands.

There's no need to be worried but you will have to monitor your bloods and control through diet and, if necessary, medication.

You will not necessarily have a big baby - the excess sugars can do that but it can also cause small babies and - in rare cases - can cause issues with the placenta so you will be closely monitored and have extra scans. Depending on how well your sugars are controlled, your consultant may recommend induction to avoid the risk of your placenta deteriorating. You'll probably also have your ketones monitored too.

I had gestational diabetes in my second pregnancy and my 6 month old is currently napping - he was perfectly healthy. I had to test my sugars four times a day. You get used to it very quickly. I controlled mostly with diet, then ultimately with metformin and a small dose of insulin when that stopped working. GD is progressive as pregnancy goes on and it can become increasingly difficult to control sugars through diet alone - all down to your hormones I'm afraid.

Unfortunately the NHS dietary advice for GD is often woefully outdated. I'd recommend having a look at this website which is a great resource for clear and useful information, and also join the associated Facebook group for support from other GD mums.
