Am only 10 weeks pregnant and already have been ill with two infections - one d and v bug at 5 weeks and one flu virus (still getting rid of). Really worried about the baby - have seen several doctors and they say there is nothing they can do until I am further on in m pregnancy. Also puking all the time with hurrendous morning sickness.

Poor you!
Developing babies are very resilient and unlikely to come to harm from most infections - drink lots of fluid and try and keep your temp down and bug your doctor/midwife if you still feel unwell, particularly if you are not keeping fluid down. I was very sick with an infection earlier in my pregnancy (admitted to hospital with lots of drips and tubes) despite this my baby seems to be developing fine (just me thats the wreck!). They are very good parasites and will take what they need from your body. Look after yourself.

The baby will probably be ok - they are very resilient.

For yourself, yes, keep drinking fluids - water or watered down fruit juice. My mum always advised having a plain biscuit first thing in the morning - keep some by your bed. I used to get queasy about 11 am so I kept biscuits and fruit at work. Had a 'thing' about eating cherry tomatoes for elevenses. Keep off coffee as it's a stomach irritant and stick to weak tea. Also ask the doctors if they can recommend non-invasive sickness cures (ie no medications).

And try not to worry too much - flu takes it out of you, so get plenty of rest.

your baby will be fine... I had a terrible time in early pregnancy. Apparently you're immune system is lowered in early pregnancy to prevent you rejecting your baby, downside is you catch every passing bug. Of course that could all be an old wives tale... sounded very plausible to me

Thanks u lot - feel a little better now. Was very sick in last pregnancy but fortunately no bugs, dd is 9 months now and I have not long since returned to work (in a hospital) - think my immune system has gone to nothing whilst I have been on maternity leave and I am catching everything going on the wards! Really struggling to find anything to drink that will stay down and not make me feel sick!

Hi madbet, welcome to MN. I agree with everyone on here, your baby will not be affected by these bugs. You may feel like poo, but pg womens bodies have the amazing ability of protecting the foetus from our day-to-day bugs. Your baby will most likely have no idea that you are feeling off colour.

Thankyou - appreciate your responses.
