Just that, how many outfits did you buy before baby was born? Did you shop for just the first few months 0-3 or shop a whole wardrobe?

How many is too many to get in one Size?

I wouldn't shop for a whole wardrobe- think I probably had about 9 or 10 sleepsuits and maybe slightly more vests, quite a few cardigans knitted by MIL but that was it. We got so many gifts that we hardly had to buy anything, though I had 2 summer babies, and lots of people sized up so got many t-shirts and shorts sets that would have fitted November- February! I exchanged them for voucher so I could buy as the winter stock came on. One thing I hadn't considered was having bad weather when we left hospital- a strong possibility in North West Scotland, even in August! I went into hospital in glorious sunshine and left in a gale with horizontal rain- thankfully DH had seen the forecast and picked up a snowsuit in the shops, as a sleepsuit and cardigan just wouldn't have cut it!

I shopped a range of up to 6 months but we didn't know if baby was a boy or a girl when I was pregnant and most gender neutral stuff is quite bland for my taste. One thing I didn't expect was that dd was small when she was born and 0-3 stuff was too big! We had to go out and get lots of tiny baby stuff which she wore for the first 4 weeks.

LupinsNotBluebells · 08/05/2018 16:13

Looking at "what to pack in your hospital bag" articles online, they seem to suggest about 5 outfits, presuming baby comes home fairly promptly. We have a couple of new born outfits (history of

I'm not buying anything past 3-6 months because you don't know how fast they'll go through sizes so you can't guess what season it will be by then. The exception would be short sleeved vests as I think they work for any season.

For my summer baby in 0-3 I'm aiming to get a minimum of:

12 short sleeved vests
4 shorts rompers
3 t-shirts
2 soft joggers/leggings
Sun hat
2 light cardigans

If I was having a girl I'd get a couple more leggings and swap some rompers/t shirts for summer dresses.

I might get a few of those things in newborn but I'd count that as being 0-3 as well.

This is because I expect my biggest issue to be keeping the baby cool. If I was having a baby in any other season I'd skip the rompers, possibly a couple more in the outfit section including cardigans, and get about 10 sleepsuits as well.

I don't want to get too much and end up with too much to use or presents which never get worn. I'll buy the later sizes later when I know what season is appropriate.

Cosmoa · 08/05/2018 16:26

Too much I think! Haha!

I've got about...
10 sleep suits
12 vests
6 leggings
6 rompers
4 cardigans
2 dresses!

Maybe more... Confused

BertieBotts · 08/05/2018 16:35

Also, shopping for baby stuff is really fun! So I'd rather get too little and be able to get more later, than go mad now and end up with so many things I can't justify more shopping later :o

ThePencil · 08/05/2018 16:42

We got hand-me-downs, so I didn't buy anything, but if I'd had to, looking back, you need a couple of packs of babygros, about 5-7 vests, a few hats and a blanket. Unless you live rurally, it's easy enough to nip to the shops if you need more - just have a look round in advance and see what shops have styles you like.

Don't open packs until you need to, and then you can exchange them - likewise, if you like to "feel" prepared, buy loads of packs but keep receipts.

ijustwannadance · 08/05/2018 16:45

All you need is a few basics. Vests/babygrows a cardi or jacket.

My DD was in 0-3 babygrows for 3 weeks. Don't overbuy, just get things as you need them. Shops are open everyday/online.

I just do a quick wash twice a week for baby stuff so no need to have loads. It really is a waste.

Nixen · 08/05/2018 16:46

I’m reading this and realising I’ve probably bought far too much for DD1 due 31 Aug 😁

PotteringAlong · 08/05/2018 16:47

By outfits do you mean babygro’s? It was a good 5 months before mine wore anything else. I got 6 before dc 1 was born and then dc2 and 3 got one each that was new rather than a hand me down Grin

FutureFairyCrayon · 08/05/2018 18:34

We didn't really do 'outfits' for the first six months, just babygros and vests (winter baby), and the occasional cardie for extra warmth. People buy you loads of stuff anyway.

ThePencil · 08/05/2018 19:47

Yeah, I found that tiny outfits are cute, but a real faff to get on and off. They also never really looked comfy. I generally put my two in babygros; when we were given tiny outfits I generally exchanged them for bigger sizes.

Mousefunky · 08/05/2018 19:50

I have a whole drawer full already. I am having an early November baby so I have a couple of jackets, a snowsuit, a couple of cardigans, plenty of socks, few baby grows, few vests, few trousers/top sets and some hats. Worth noting I haven’t bought all of this recently, some is from last year which sadly ended in a miscarriage.

Mousefunky · 08/05/2018 19:52

Some is in 0-3 and some is in 3-6. I don’t bother with newborn because my three DC were all big babies and I’m not expecting this one to be any different.

gassylady · 08/05/2018 19:57

We didn’t no sex either time. So baby gros and vests in white/neutral about ten of each plus couple of hats and mitts. One nice neutral going home outfit - that was messed up whilst attempting to insert into car seat! Home in white babygro it was.

MrsSPx · 08/05/2018 20:06

@Nixen I was just thinking exactly the same! First baby here and she is spoilt rotten already 🙈

lifechangesforever · 08/05/2018 20:06

DD due in July.. she has an entire wardrobe of First size - 9 months and a full drawer of stuff too. It's all stuff that has been bought for us and there's probably more to come Confused I've just gone with the notion of 'it will fit her when it fits' and not getting too hung up on sizes, although hoping all the 3-6 month stuff fits her when we go to Florida in November as there's a lot of summer clothes there.

I've made sure to buy a good assortment of cheaper babygrows, vests and sleep suits for when we're just in the house and for multiple changes a day if there's accidents.

MumofBoysx2 · 08/05/2018 20:10

Too many! They grow so quickly, I didn't use half of it (and of course I got loads of outfits as gifts). Looking back, I would have just bought loads of sleepsuits and vests, a few cardigans and that's it, they are so practical and look so cute in sleepsuits :-)

BertieBotts · 08/05/2018 20:13

The only outfits I'd do for a newborn would be t-shirt and soft trousers over a vest, a romper suit in the height of summer, probably not over a vest (this is basically just a summer version of a babygro) or a summer dress. Otherwise babygros all the way. Oh and cardigans! Not jumpers. Because they are a massive pain to squeeze over a newborn's head and you feel terrible about it.

Definitely no dungarees, shorts, skirts, hoodies, other complicated arrangements.

Just the short sleeved vest on its own to sleep and sometimes during the day if feeling lazy!

If they are in a growbag you can put long sleeved vests on as pyjamas, keeps their arms warm.

Once they are starting to move about a bit it starts to make sense to do more outfitty type things because they get crunched up in sleepsuits. Then you can go for your dungarees and heavier dresses, if it's cold. This is when long sleeved vests become useful again because they go underneath those things quite well or under a short sleeved t-shirt.

ReggaetonLente · 08/05/2018 20:19

Another one who has hopelessly overshopped for her first 🙈

tarheelbaby · 08/05/2018 20:20

it was back in the day (DD1 is turning 11 this month!) but I bought almost nothing because I saw how much people gave when other relatives/friends' babies were born. So I bought a vest or 2 but SIL loaned me some plain white things (sleepsuits, hat) and when DD arrived, DH's first job was to go buy her a full set: vest, sleeper, hat, mitts. And so many people gave us beautiful things.

Plus, you don't really know what size your DBaby will be. Some are tiny - less than 6lbs - and some are huge - 9+lbs and growing. The little clothes are CUTE but try to restrain yourself Grin

BertieBotts · 08/05/2018 20:50

BTW - I've found making a pinterest board to be an extremely soothing way to calm these urges! And if anyone asks what I want I can point them to it Grin Plus - later I know exactly which shops have all the cute things I want in.

MaverickSnoopy · 09/05/2018 06:46

With our first I bought all the 0-3 things which included a mixture of clothes. People then gave us loads of clothes too. We had far too much and in hindsight it was awful putting little outfits on a newborn in winter. I should have stuck to sleep suits.

With our second we reused everything but because she was a summer baby I also bought a few rompers and dresses. Actually a good thing (despite already having a mass of clothes) because it was such a hot summer when she was born that we were all dripping and the dresses/rompers were very handy on the days that weren't warm enough to just be in a nappy.

Moral of the story, don't buy too much. Just get some vests and sleep suits and some scratch mittens plus a few bits of weather appropriate things and then wait and see.

BrutusMcDogface · 09/05/2018 06:59

Tshirts on a newborn ride up and just look so uncomfortable. Same with dresses. And as for tiny jeans!! Yuk. Sleepsuits/vests and rompers are all you'll need.
