Sciatica pain - mid pregnancy

Hello Ladies, I'm new in here - so hello :-)

I'm almost 23 weeks pregnant and have been dealing with a sciatica pain for the last two/three weeks. It's been awful and is the worst in the morning or after sitting for longer then 5 minutes. I walk like an old lady, as sometimes I can't really stand on my left leg properly (the pain is in my left buttock) At nights it's also no fun as it hurts every time I turn around.
I'm doing prenatal pilates, some yoga and have already seen a chiropractor - nothing seem to help!
If any one has an experience with that - I'd love some advice please! It scares me to death that I'll be like that until my baby is born and that it will make my labour more difficult (can't really squat for example etc)

Morning, i'm 24wks and am also in a similar situation.

I bought a yoga ball at the weekend and that seems to have helped. I've also bought one in for work as i'm desk bound most the day and so far so good!

Otherwise warm baths and massages have been nice.

Hi @Masia

I am exactly the same!! 21 weeks pregnant and really suffering with sciatica pain in my right side. I spoke to our midwife about it and she said it's a sign that you're doing too much and has suggested sitting down where poss.

I also cant really turn in bed or it wakes me up and also struggling to walk on my leg some nights.

I've found that resting really helps as theres no medication / cream that can help. xx

So sorry to hear you're suffering with it. I've had it throughout the second part of my pregnancy and really struggled with it. There are some exercises you can do that can ease it and also ice can help? I gave birth to my little man on Sunday and thankfully it didn't affect my labour at all and it hasn't hurt at all since then. Really hope it's the same for you xx

Poor you! Hopefully you’ll find it will pass in a week or so when baby moves. I had it badly at about 16-18 weeks - it was killing me in the night and keeping me awake. I tried to do some floor-based exercises but they hurt so much I almost got stuck on the floor!

Not sure if this was the cure, but I forced myself to go swimming, and while it was actually a bit uncomfortable to do the swimming, the sciatica pain magically disappeared the next day. Now almost 30 weeks and it hasn’t returned. Touch wood!

@Sugar44

Try deep heat cream it's safe to use during pregnancy but first speak to your doctor I was told I can use this and it works wonders for me and at nighttime I put a water bottle under my back and that seems to sooth the pain

The waist bands that support your bump are great for helping to redistribute weight. If you talk to your GP or midwife they should also be able to refer you to an obstetric physio, which can really help.

Thank you so much for your replies and advice ladies!

The pain went away last night actually!! The relief was great, as it lasted more then two weeks and I was so scared that it will be like that all the time.. I'm not sure what helped in the end - probably the mixture of a chiropractor and prenatal pilates classes. After last night's class I walked home almost pain free and today it feels like I'm back to normal!
I hope it lasts.. :-)

Have you tried a special cushion? I had a while host of back/pelvis drama with my first and I’m the end not sitting down for very long, lots of gentle walking and making sure I kept my knees together when I got out of bed, out the car etc eased it. Defo recommend an angled cushion with a bit cut out for your tail bone - amazon sell them and it made the car and work so much easier when I did have to sit down. They tip your knees lower than your pelvis so it takes the pressure of your lower back. Worth a look. X
