Nursing bras (and boobs in general)

Hello. I'm currently packing my hospital bag (I'm 35 weeks) and one of the items to pack is a nursing bra. I plan on breastfeeding if I can and would need one for this purpose but my boobs haven't changed at all during pregnancy. I haven't bought a single new bra through the time I've been pregnant as my pre prgnancy bras still fit perfectly.

I just assumed this was normal until I started googling (why, oh why do I google?!) am I alone in this?

I have planned to buy a couple of bras in my current size for my hospital bag and then see what happens post birth and go get fitted if need be, however I'm just wondering if I should expect to suddenly 'hulk-out' boob wise in the next couple of weeks and I'll have wasted my money on bras that are too small and I should hold off for a couple of week or not bother at all until after the birth and make do with the bras I have currently?

First off, you’re not alone in the boobs not changing in pregnancy department. Mine have stayed the same size and this is my 3rd pregnancy so they didn’t change in either of the first two either. Secondly, nursing bras that are in your normal size but with a bit of give for milk coming in and when they’re full of milk in general will be handy. My nursing bras are from amazon, think they’re in just a size medium (not exactly specific) and they have stretch so when the milk comes and the boobs grow like I’ve had a boob job, I will have room for them. Hope that makes some sense? My pregnancy addled brain isn’t with it today! Ha! X

Are you near a bravissimo? I went in a few weeks before my due date. They measured me and I got 2 nursing bras that fitted perfectly after the birth. Would recommend them.

Bluebirdsky · 05/05/2018 14:52

It is now recommended that you don't get measured for nursing bras until 6-8 weeks after the birth so that you can allow for any changes.
However when you milk comes in I would anticipate needing something a bit bigger than your current size so maybe go up a size or two or get some stretchy sports style bras that have some give in them.

Perhaps check out HM nursing vests? They have that inner stretchy bit and offer some but not a great deal of support. Good to cover your tummy though and I wore them a lot with a loose top on top for coverage breastfeeding when out of the house.

Good luck with the birth OP x

I got a two pack of sleep nursing bras. They won't win any beauty contests but they span a few sizes and are comfortable and will hold breast pads in place which is what you need.

Friends have recommended this time - just get nursing tank tops instead. Same idea, I might do this. Apparently these are handy for summer as well.

Thanks everyone.

I'm a 36GG so support is definitely needed! I'll have a look round and see if I can find something in whopper size with a bit of support and a bit of give for now, then go with the flow once the baby has put in an appearance.

I’d definitely recommend the Freya wired nursing bra. I bought from John Lewis 2 weeks before I was due. Kept the tags in case they didn’t fit when my milk came in so I could return for a bigger cup size (but didn’t need to in the end).

BertieBotts · 05/05/2018 15:08

Worth noting, you don't massively NEED nursing bras in hospital as your milk probably won't come in fully until you're at home, and you don't leak before then. Unless you want the support.

MOLKE

Just buy the cheapest ones you can find for now - no point buying expensive ones until a few weeks after birth when you know if you'll definitely be breastfeeding and when you're milk's come in and you know how big you need to buy.

Given your bust size, I would definitely recommend bravissimo once everything's settled down - their fitting is excellent and they stock some nursing bras that are both pretty and underwired!
