Has anyone been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism during their pregnancy? If so, what did it mean for you and your baby? Thanks in advance

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and have been prescribed levothyroxine. 75mg daily. I was told that it's not so important early on in pregnancy, but the baby needs lots of thyroxine in later pregnancy.
I'm only 6w+5d, so still a way to go.
I was slightly hypo before the pregnancy, not because of.
Which one are you?

I have hypothyroidism and had my medication increased initially at 5 weeks. Was referred to the consultant but was discharged at 13 weeks as she said hypothyroidism is only a risk in the first trimester whereas hyperthyroidism is a risk later on. I still have to have regular blood tests to check my tsh levels though.

Gem, it's the opposite, you need it in early pregnancy, towards the end it's just you as baby has developed their own thyroid. The mother's thyroid starts to grow in the first trimester to accommodate her extra blood volume and for the baby.

However, it's excellent you've been diagnosed.

Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism have very different treatment plans in pregnancy. Which one are you concerned about op?

Lots of info here:

I've had two pregnancies with no thyroid function. First one was a bit messed up, but all was well, this one I've been completely on top of.

hey I have an underactive thyroid problem, wasn't sure at first for baby, but the midwife said there was a risk baby could be smaller. I am 27 weeks and have had a 26-week growth scan, the baby is bang in the middle not too big or too small so all is well, il get another scan at 32 weeks. my dose was increased to 75 as well. I want to use the pool when in labour and midwife said they way things are going i won't need to be closely monitored during labour and doctor said should be fine was happy with that.

I have hyperthyroidism, I take thyroxine and they referred me to the hospital who upped my dose towards the end of my pregnancy, speak to your midwife and she will refer you to the hospital x

I was diagnosed with mild hypothyroidism when we were TTC and it was taking a long time. They put me on 25mg Levothyroxine and we conceived 4 weeks later, so I do think it was having an affect.

When I found out I was pregnant I was seen by the endocrinology clinic at my booking appointment and the doctor told me that usually thyroid function decreases as the pregnancy progresses. He upped my dosage to 50mg straight away and told me they would do a blood test for thyroid function every time I went for a scan, to know when I needed to increase further. Now I'm 27 weeks and up to 75mg.

As far as I understand, as long as you're taking your meds it won't affect your pregnancy at all

Ruthie, if on thyroxine, it's hypothyroidism.

In full pre existing hypothyroidism you need to raise your dose in the first trimester.

If you've been put on around 25 - 75 before or during early pregnancy, it's highly likely you will need to be on more by the end of pregnancy and you may not go down, having then developed full hypothyroidism.

The key is regular blood tests through out pregnancy- ideally every 4-6 weeks; and tsh needs to be below 2.5 in the first trimester and below 3 thereafter (though in reality you may feel better if it's nearer 1 or even 0.5, which is absolutely fine if you feel ok and t4 is within range).
