Hair colouring

Didn't know whether to post this here or in beauty.

My hair is brown. With ds I was blonde when I got pregnant. I didn't want to carry on colouring my hair and so ended up with huge black routes.

This time I thought plan ahead, colour my hair brown before getting pregnant. But now it's started to grow out I have loads of grey!

I was thinking of using a natural hair colour. Does anyone know any good ones that are "safe" in pregnancy. I've seen one in Holland and Barrett but don't know whether it is any good.

You can use any sort of hair colour in pregnancy. They have not been shown to be dangerous

I thought it was untested.

I'd rather not risk it personally. Hair colour has alot of chemicals in it that it don't want to expose the baby too.

My hairdresser advised it was fine to colour hair after the first trimester.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2018 22:49

Putting it on your hair isn't really exposing your baby to it.

I'm not sure that wholly impartial advice Smile

I appreciate it may be "safe" to colour your hair while pregnant. But the safety of hair colour in general is now being debated.

So if there is a decent natural hair colour I would rather use that.

Nhs link suggests henna. Where is the safety of hair dye being debated?

TroubledLichen · 04/05/2018 23:01

Hair colour is perfectly safe in pregnancy as per that NHS link posted by dementedpixie.

But if you’d rather not for whatever reason then you could try the Lush bars. They are messy compared to the conventional stuff though.

Personally I would trust the NHS over alternative advice. I have been highlighting my hair. I wouldn't if the NHS said it may be unsafe but that's not the case. Where are you finding your alternative information? I haven't found anything academic suggesting hair dye is an issue.

Source please?

Henna is more natural (although I am not an expert on the ingredients).

There is no reputable source that I can see that debates the safety of hair colouring in pregnancy. So whilst obviously it's your personal preference not to, it may be useful for other readers to know that the NHS advice is that it's fine.

I suspect that more ‘natural’ hair colours have had a lot less testing than the regular kinds available in boots, Superdrug etc.

Some of the 'natural' colours contain unusual amounts of salts and metals. They're a nightmare if you're a colourist and your client has been using them. It's even worse if they don't tell you they've been using them.

Lush Caca Rouge is fine, I'm not sure about the others. You'd have to contact Lush and ask if they contain any metallic salts or other 'natural' salts and metals.
