Overly anxious or legitimate reasons for wanting to change where I give birth?

Baby is due in 5 weeks time. I live in Nottingham and I have the choice to give birth at 1 of 2 hospitals, QMC or City (I mention location in case anyone has any direct experience of either place). We live 5-10 mins drive away from QMC and 20-30 mins from City so it seemed a bit of a no brainer and I opted for QMC, midwife appointments are at my doctors surgery but scans, GTT etc have been at QMC. I’ve had no issues throughout my pregnancy. Both hospitals have a labour suite which is doctor led and for higher risk pregnancies and a birth centre in the same location which is midwife led but they can grab doctors etc if they need them from the labour suite next door. I would be giving birth at the midwife led unit.

We have been attending the NHS classes and these are split between the two hospitals so we have had chance to get to see both and having done so I am starting to think I have made the wrong choice and would prefer to give birth at City for the following reasons:

1 - There is building work going on to replace the ventilation at QMC which will won’t be complete until well after my due date. They are doing it whilst keeping the units open but shutting various corridors to work on them as they go. This has meant that the split between the two units is a bit blurred and some of the rooms feel a bit make shift. The midwife running the session last night didn’t really seem to know which bit was which as we walked around, this isn’t a problem in itself but my worry is that if things start to go south during the birth and they need to get additional staff in there is confusion as to which bits are currently in use and where people are. We haven’t been to that bit of the hospital during the day but I’m also slightly concerned about trying to give birth whilst someone is drilling in the next corridor.

2 - Whenever we have been to QMC during the day we have had to park in a pub car park down the road as there is never any car parking space. The midwife mentioned last night that they have spaces for maternity drop off at the entrance and if the baby is imminent then they have no issues with you leaving the car there for a bit. The issue is that the maternity entrance is the main entrance to the hospital (including A&E) and the drop off point is fairly consistently full. It has been whenever we have gone during the day for scans and it was last night at 8pm when we left the class. It is on my route to work so I went and looked this morning at 6.45am and there were about 2 spaces free. The campus at City hospital is a lot more spread out and maternity has it’s own drop off spaces that have always been free when we’ve been and we’ve always managed to get a space on site in one of the car parks.

3 – The midwives running the classes at City have been very experienced and have a general air of confidence that left me with the impression that whatever happened they’d seen it all before and they could deal with it. At QMC the midwives running the classes have been younger and seemed a lot more timid. Obviously I haven’t met all of them at both hospitals but my feeling is that City is a better run unit with more experienced staff.

Anyway, am I being precious and worrying too much or would you reconsider given what I’ve said above? Also does anyone know if in fact it is too late to swap now?

Sorry that was long!

I don't think it actually really matters what your reasons are, if you genuinely have a choice then you should aim to give birth wherever you think you will be most comfortable you don't have to justify it.

It's not too late to change where you want to give birth but you need to make sure you are booked in at the option you are considering.

I'm booked in at two birthing centres for DC2 (I'm 34 weeks and only booked into one of them yesterday!) and I have been told I can just choose which one I want to go to on the day. This is necessary for childcare reasons for DC1 (time of day will depend on which grandparents are available and which direction we will need to travel in) and also because we are very rural and both the birthing centres can only accommodate 1 birth at a time each so if one is full I will hopefully be able to go to the other instead anyway.

I think either is fine, but the most important thing is you feel comfortable. Therefore I'd ask to change.

It doesn’t matter what your reasons are, you should give birth wherever you feel most comfortable. Just speak to your midwife and I’m sure they’ll be able to swap you over.

I've had both my babies at City. Wonderful experiences both time!
Friends also rate QMC. I prefer the set up of city. Tends to be quieter and a bit more intimate. Parking was a dream at city too. Drop off bays are right next to the labour suite at city which is brilliant.

You need to be comfortable. If you'd be happier at City then switch :)

Also - every single midwife I came across at city were amazing!

PJsAndProsecco · 03/05/2018 09:36

Hi OP, I'm also in Nottingham and giving birth at QMC. Feel free to drop me a PM if you'd like to chat :) x

I’ve chosen a hospital near here(20ish mins away) but hoping to give birth in one that’s an hour away as I did with my last, and I’m also registered there. We moved and I was going through transferring but then changed my mind, because the hospital here just isn’t on par I suppose? They’re fine with me being over there, but obviously in an emergency I’d have no choice but to go closer

FloydOnThePull · 03/05/2018 09:49

Thanks everyone (you've made me feel like less of an idiot over worrier!) , I think i might change, I'm seeing the midwife next week so will have a chat with her and see if we can swap.

Good luck! The Sanctuary is an incredible experience if you are able. But the labour suite at city also has a lovely calm feeling too. But you'll be fine whichever hospital! How exciting! X

pigshavecurlytails · 03/05/2018 09:54

you can ask, but this close they may say they have no capacity where you want to change to. It'll be your GP who will need to do a new referral, so I'd ring them and get them to do it asap. nothing to do with the current MW.

It probably differs area to area pigs I didn't need to ask 'permission' from either my midwife or my GP (round here GPs have absolutely nothing to do with maternity care any way) I just rang the birthing centre and asked if I could have a look round and get booked in.

They know I'm also booked in elsewhere as well. It's just not been a problem.

Also I don't think the hospital can just refuse to book someone in on the basis they might be full the day you give birth. I moved to a new area a few weeks before DC1 was born, my new hospital couldn't exactly turn round and say 'nah you left it too late mate'

Perhaps it's different in more urban areas but certainly where I live most people have to travel at least 40 minutes to give birth in one of the two birthing centres and an hour if you want to give birth in one if two hospitals. When the time comes you can have a preference but if they are full they are full and you have to choose one of the other options whether you were booked in there or not.
