Hi mums and mums to be.
I'm 6 months preg and I have bought a cot but haven't got a mattress yet, I was wondering at what point I could buy the mattress after baby is here, I cant remember as I had my son 9 years ago, but what age do babies stop sleeping in crib/mosses basket??

In my experience Moses baskets stop being practical after a few weeks (maybe up to 3 months?).
I use a bedside crib, last dc was in it till 8 months old before going into cotbed in own room. New dc probably will outgrow it before 6 months.
Advice is to keep them in same room with you until 6 months old.

My sons both went into theirs about 4 months. Still uses the Moses basket downstairs for naps until 5/6 months ish.

You'll definitely be fine to but it once baby is here, if you need to wait.

However it was useful to have somewhere safe to put him upstairs whilst I dressed/showered etc.

Our DS was in his cot in our room from day 1.

I don't think there's a minimum age as long as the cot is in your bedroom. We've always put ours straight into a cot at night.

They should be 6 months before they sleep in a different room from you though.

Ours went in his cot, in our room, from literally day 1. Midwife advised babies often don’t like the large open space (relatively speaking!) after the confines of the womb, but we thought we’d give it a try and didn’t have any problems.

Whenever you want them to! Some babies sleep better in a cot from day one, some prefer a Moses basket or bedside crib.

We had the cot bed up against our bed with a Sleepyhead in from day 1.

Another one who went straight into a cot (with a nest) rather than using a Moses basket.

Judging by threads on here babies either hate Moses baskets or struggle to transition from a Moses basket to a bigger cot.

Luckily we had the room in our room to have a full size cot bed, so we used that with one side removed and pushed up to the bed until about 5 months. Then away from the bed with the side back on until about 13 months when we moved both cot and baby into their own room with no issues.

Thank you for the replies. I think il wait till baby is at least 4 weeks till I get a mattress and concentrate on other items for now then put the baby into the cot, good to know there's not really an age limit just when your comfortable putting baby in cot. thanks again

@trilbydoll how are you finding this? This is my plan for when baby arrives

bloomsburyer · 04/05/2018 08:17

We had our baby in the cot in her sleepyhead right away as she refused to sleep in her Moses basket.

trilbydoll · 04/05/2018 13:47

@Nelle she's 3 in a couple of weeks and still prefers our bed Grin in all seriousness it was really good because it basically made our bed huge. No worries about dh squashing her or her falling out. I'm incredibly lazy so with dd1 never bothered to put her back in the moses basket and as a result she'd still rather be in our bed aged 5. DD2 I could make the minimal effort to put her back in the Sleepyhead and she's a way better sleeper, slept through earlier than dd1 did.

Safe sleeping guidelines for SIDS says they should go into the crib as soon as they get home, swaddled, with feet at the bottom of the crib. They look adorably tiny in there. You can pull the crib up right next to your bed for cuddles if you want.

@trilbydoll you've filled me with hope. Straight int be cot baby goes!

happymummy12345 · 04/05/2018 16:17

Every baby is different.
My son was 4 months when we had to put him in the cot, as he was too long for the crib (never had a Moses basket as I don't like them at all).

Er, I think I lost something in translation here. I thought cot and crib were interchangeable. So I meant cot then. Straight into the cot! Smile
