Positive outcomes telling employer

Hi all, looking for reassurance that things may be OK in terms of work. I was about 10 weeks into a new job when I fell pregnant, and 11 weeks along now, with dating scan next week. There's a 6mth probation, and although I understand the probation thing is a bit of a red herring, and an employer can let an employee go any time within the first 12mths without reason, I'm really trying to shake these pessimistic thoughts I have.

Do any MN have positive stories of telling new employers and being able to keep their job/return to it after maternity leave? I will really need to have a job to go back to, since we will need to get a bigger house now.

Thanks for reading.

  1. they cannot sack you because you're pregnant. Unfair dismissal kicks in the second you're hired for protected characteristics. Pregnancy and maternity is one of those.

  2. My work have been great since telling them. I'd been there 18 months when I got pregnant. I had bad morning sickness in the first trimester so told them really early on. I'm now 22 weeks.

Turns out I conceived a week after I started my job, whoops!
Like yourself didn't know how it would be taken especially as it's a small private business!
My boss has been really helpful :) x

I was pregnant starting one job about 5 weeks along. You don't have to tell yet anyway wait it out a bit if you can. Most places seem to be fine anyway and rightly so

Thanks for the replies. I've still not told work, 15 weeks now, and sickness has subsided, still really tired though. They're making plans for Christmas cover and I feel bad because I'm going to screw that up, but I keep thinking, I'd only give 1mth notice of leaving, so I'm fine.
