Working in radiography

Hi all. I work in radiography though never come into contact with active radiation. Our local rules stipulate that as soon as a female employee finds out she is pregnant she needs to inform her line manager. I just wondered if anyone else has been in this situation. It's so early, I'm not sure I want to tell my manager and in the years that I have worked here I have never received any radiation.

Thoughts/advice?

Follow protocol or you could end up disciplinary proceedings.

Pretty strict rules we have same as NHS as first 12 weeks are important for development.

I think you have to notify, but you can sign a waiver.

Local rules say to report, and it's to keep you both safe. Your manager won't disclose it but will conduct a risk assessment with you. It's not a big deal and happens many times. And not following procedure could be considered a under the disciplinary procedures.

Radiographer here. I told my manager as soon as I knew both times I was pregnant, and I did usually have a (tiny) dose on my film badge.

They do a risk assessment and ask you what you are happy / not happy to do. To be honest it was the manual handling after 20 weeks (wearing a lead, shifting patients about etc) that was more prohibitive than the radiation risk.

She should keep it confidential. Good luck Flowers
