Question about after a C section

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what people’s experiences were regarding holding your baby after c section?

My biggest worry is not being able to hold them afterwards, and I’ve read they like to wait until anaesthetic wears off (how long would that be?). I really want to hold my baby straight away, or even just have them held to me the entire time. It sounds ridiculous but out of everything I’m worried about with a c section, this is what I fear the most.

I can’t stand the thought of being away from them for any length of time afterwards.

Please could you let me know what happened if you’ve had a c section? I’m unsure how it works

If your c section is planned then you can ask to have a cuddle in the theatre - my DS was put on my chest under my gown and I could be close to him - then afterwards they sat me up in bed and put him on me -could cuddle him all I wanted! Just needed someone to take him from me and help move him for the first 24 hours.

I had immediate skin to skin as soon as the cord was cut, he was plopped onto my chest. I’d told the theatre staff that that was what I wanted to happen and they were more than happy to oblige.

4dc and as soon as everyone was born i could cuddle and was holding them whilst i was transferred back to the ward. The only time i needed help before anesthetic wore off was for nappy changing and picking them up and putting them back in their cot

Thankyou for the reply.
My baby is transverse so the plan is (if he’s still the same next week) to turn and induce me, I was told it’s very possible this would lead to a section due to no progress. Also if I go into labour before he turns then it’s a section, also they may just do a section depending if they can move him or not... so unfortunately I don’t think any of these (other than maybe the latter?) fall under planned section. Would it be different because it wasn’t planned?

DH held DC2 until I had been stitched up but after that I was able to hold/feed. I couldn’t get up to change her but no great loss there!

I probably wouldn’t have stood and held them on the first day but was fine the second. I found having a cot attached to the bed a life saver though.

I didn’t have a CS with DC1 and I was in far more pain! CS was a breeze in comparison.

Thank you for the replies! This makes me feel so much better about it. The last couple of nights I’ve been up trying to figure out what would happen and google hasn’t been too sure.

@LooksLikeImStuckHere I’ll accept that DP has to hold him if absolutely necessary but I really want those first cuddles. I just feel like I need that and it worries me that I might just be led there whilst DP has all the first cuddles. (I sound very selfish! Lol. I’m happy for DP to have lots and lots of cuddles. I just really want the first half hour or so to myself I suppose)

Sorry, should have said that I got the first cuddles but that DH did the holding and skin to skin (important for him too). I was tilted at an angle and found it really hard to hold for very long.

I've had a planned and an emergency c section, both times have held baby straight away. With the emergency (after a failed induction), I only had him for a few minutes as I was a bit out of it so DH took him until I was ready.
With the planned baby was on me for about 10 minutes then DH while I was stitched up & moved. He then didn't move off me for the rest of the day Smile

I didn't have baby on me until in recovery and he was latched on to breast by midwife straight away. Pretty much remained on me doing skin to skin for most of the day.

I felt too trapped and uncomfortable to have baby on me during section. With the drip attached to cannula and lying flat it just felt too awkward.

Fluffybat · 02/05/2018 07:18

I had an emergency c-section and they put my son on my chest as soon as he was born. I was holding his and breastfeeding him within an hour. I couldn't get out of bed to pick him up for the first 2 days but my dh stayed with me so gave him to me whenever I wanted him.

We have had 2 elcs, both times DW got to hold our boys before they were taken and weighed etc. I then held them whilst they stitched her up and then he was given back to her to be taken to the recovery room.
She held and fed them both all the time she was there.

I had to have a section under GA ( failed spinal) so I didn't see DS for about 90 mins! It was very strange being the last to know what he was, and being wheeled upstairs to meet DH holding our fully clothed baby. But can honestly say it hasn't affected our bond at all! This time hoping the spinal will work so I can be awake.

Unihorn · 02/05/2018 08:24

I've had an emergency and elective and was unable to hold mine on either of them until the stitching was finished around 30-40 minutes later. Both times my husband has held the baby up by my cheek for some semblance of skin to skin. A lot of it depends on how the baby is and the checks needed.

FranticallyPeaceful · 02/05/2018 16:25

Thank you. I know I’m overthinking it but I’m panicking for some reason. There’s a chance DP won’t be there as he works in London, although may be able to get back in time... although even if he is, his baby holding skills aren’t great lol Confused

I've had 2 csections, not planned but "emergencies" with a few hours notice. With my first he was taken straight to special care, second was put on my chest immediately and we spent the entire evening snuggled together once I was back in the ward.
