Gestational diabetes is a temporary form of diabetes in which the body does not produce adequate amounts of insulin to deal with sugar during pregnancy. The biggest part of treating gestational diabetes is controlling your blood sugar levels which your doctor or midwife should be advising you on how to do this. It's really important to be very careful with your diet and to make sure you get a good amount of exercise - both these things are the most important in keeping it under control.

It's not something to be too scared of though, as long as you make all your antenatal appointments and are monitered regularly you will be fine. The most common outcome of gestational diabetes is a large baby. My mum had gestational diabetes with my siblings and they were both over 10 pounds and approx 22 inches long but perfectly healthy babies, and now perfectly healthy young adults. My mum also recovered from the gestation diabetes as soon as the pregnancies had finished and she has never had any other health problems as a result of the GD. As far as how it will effect you now it mostly means you will need to be running off to pee more often and you will tend to feel thirsty all the time - these are the most classic signs. Hope this helps some, but don't worry, it's all a temporary thing that with monitering won't effect you a whole lot so long as you are careful.
