Bleeding at 24 weeks

Ok I really do need advice now.

I am 24 weeks tomorrow and have been bleeding on and off since week 20. My community midwife and GP just keep sending me home so hassled hospital antenatal for appointment last week. Got told bleeding was not placental in origin. They tested my blood as I am rhesus negative as well just to complicate things. Got called in the next day for more Anti-D as there had been crossing over. Contradicts what I was told by the doc last week - surely any crossover HAS to come from the placenta? I has anti D at 20 weeks as well when all this first started.

The baby was fine when they did a scan last week and they said the placenta is in the right place so it isn't praevia. I started bleeding again yesterday and still am although its hardly any at all.

Whenever I look this up it tells bleeding now is a very bad thing and had to be placenta praevia or abruption but I've never had any real pain. I get a stitch sometimes when I walk but thats about it.

I am seeing a consultant at the ante natal clinic tomorrow (I insisted on it based on the fact that the midwives and registrars seemed to give me duff info last week) and I can feel my baby kicking around so I'm not panicking but does anyone have any idea what this can be? Up until now the hospital have just said "well it happens" but it doesn't seem to be normal for anyone else. This is my first pg and I'm scared.

Is it possible for the placenta to malfunction in some way without any pain occuring?

unlikely it is placental , if your placenta is in the correct place and you have no pain....at your scan, placenta should have been checked too...

has a cervical erosion been ruled out , they are a cause of bleeding in pregnancy, but not dangerous

hope you get some answers tomorrow

Oh dear, I am sorry. I've had lots of bleeding this pg (placenta praevia) and it's always horrid.

A serious abruption without pain is pretty much impossible, I think. What is the blood like - red, brown, pink, heavy, light? Your placenta might have been praevia but have 'moved' now, and there might still be a bit of old blood coming. Sorry I can't really reassure you, though.

You do need proper reassurance, so well done for pushing for consultant appt. If the bleeding is/becomes heavy, go to hospital immediately.

Thanks for speedy replies. Believe me if it becomes any heavier I will head straight for the nearest hospital!

Interestingly when I was admitted at 20 weeks when this all started they said the placenta was a "bit lower then they would like". However, several weeks later the sonogopher said it was in the right place so maybe it has shifted a bit.

Nobody has checked me for cervical erosion but if the bleeding was coming from there it wouldn't give me a need for AntiD would it?

I had a bleed that sounds the same at about 24 weeks pg with my dd. They told me it sometimes happens and is nothing to worry about. Something to do with cervix i think they said. I was fine and dd now 2. Hope that helps

Hi Pennypops.

I had bleeding at 23+6 and was terrified. I went to hospital and they did scan and baby was fine and so was placenta, heard heartbeat which was fine and an internal examination which is when they said the cause of bleeding was cervical erosion.

Bleeding has stopped now but they have said it can come back. It just means that there is grazing on the cervix and not dangerous.

Have they done an internal examination on you? The good thing about an internal is that they can reassure you that the cervix is tightly shut.

Don't panic, but good on you for pushing. You need answers to reassure you.

Will also say that from your first post about the stitch, I get this alot too.

I had an internal at 20 weeks when I went in with 1st bleed and they said it was tightly shut but didn't mention any erosion. I guess things can change a lot over 4 weeks but if I know its this I'll be a lot happier.

Am very reassured to hear that some of you had this happen at much the same time.

Thanks again for kind words x
