Hi all.. I am 4 weeks pregnant (if you count the 2 weeks they add on) and I am going away to Thailand end of next month. Have any of you been on long haul flights whilst pregnant?

Me!

My first baby I flew from Brazil to Rome to London before I knew I was pregnant (found out when I landed) - 14 hours

My second baby I flew from Dubai to London (7 hours)

And I'm pregnant again, just turned 5 weeks and have flown 8 hours. Flying home again on Monday.

I used to wear compression socks but haven't bothered the last couple of times, plenty of water and walking to the toilet!!

hammeringinmyhead · 28/04/2018 16:48

I flew to Boston alone at 8 weeks. I wore flight socks and jet lag hit me hard but it was fine.

Longdistance · 28/04/2018 16:50

Yes.

I was 5 months pg when I went to st. Lucia with my dh.

Then I was about 9 weeks pg when I went to Oz with dh and dd1.

Yes, several times. We used to live in the US so I flew back to the UK and from NY to Alaska and back with DS1, and with DS2 we were living here and went to the US while I was about 6 weeks pregnant. It wasn't a problem at all. Just get your health checked out beforehand, wear flight socks and drink lots of water so you don't dehydrated.

NewSense · 28/04/2018 16:59

Compression socks, lots of water (keep asking! They don't offer anywhere near often enough!), and keep walking :)

Check your travel insurance carefully for pregnancy things. There's a company that deals with pregnancy travel insurance (can't recall their name), but they are worth investigating.

Have fun!

I've been on many long haul flights pregnant but I personally wouldn't go to Thailand due to the zika risk. You will get a full refund due to this - I know as we have just had to cancel our holiday to Thailand as I fell pregnant unexpectedly

BumbleNova · 28/04/2018 19:11

I think Thailand is a risk for Zika? You may want to reconsider.

Bumblealong1 · 29/04/2018 00:05

I wouldn’t worry about the flight. But I would definitely check for Zika, and malaria. I thought Thailand had both.

Numbkinnuts · 29/04/2018 00:19

Flew to Australia from UK at 10 weeks.

Morning sickness felt worse due tiredness. Other than that ok.

Slumberparty · 29/04/2018 05:21

I went to Thailand when I was pregnant 2 years ago. I checked before hand the area I was going to was very low for zika- make sure you wear insect repellent every time you go out - and only ones containing deet will work.
I flew pregnant several times. Just done a short haul at 10 weeks which was fine and during first pregnancy did long-haul at 32 weeks - that one was a little uncomfortable . Unfortunately I will be doing the same long-haul at 32 weeks with this pregnancy but with a toddler in tow also Confused

eurochick · 29/04/2018 05:39

I had the same thought as others re zika.

I flew quite a bit when pregnant. I wore flight socks, drank plenty and went for an aisle seat so I could move about easily and get up to pee loads.

Hayleyxmx · 29/04/2018 06:33

I was working in Thailand when I found out I was pregnant and couldn’t get out of there enough, zika was a high risk. definitely not a place to go pregnant the smell of pine oil and street food still makes my stomach churn. As for the flight I flew home at 9weeks pregnant the flight with etihad wasn’t the most comfortable I wouldn’t do long haul again unless I could afford business class. 17 hours in economy was hell 🙈

Flyingchimps · 29/04/2018 09:10

Me!

Flew to Australia and back 10-13 weeks pregnant. Had a little bit of bleeding on the flight each way but the midwife said it was likely from the the change in pressure etc. Baby is doing fine at 30 weeks 🙌🏻

elderflowerandrose · 29/04/2018 09:16

I would be worried about Zika virus

Nad1122 · 29/04/2018 10:21

I flew to South Africa at four weeks. All was fine. Only thing I'd suggest, aside from the usual drink water and move about, is flight socks. I didn't have any on the flight out and my ankles swelled so much. Not painful but I felt self conscious.

aaaarti · 29/04/2018 12:52

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't even think about Zika but super worried and defo reconsidering now. Will be speaking to my doctor next week to get more advice as I will just be in the resort etc but it all comes down to if i want to take that risk... Confused

Yep! Flew back from Bolivia when I was 9 weeks pregnant.. 3 flights, including a 12 hour flight from Rio to LHR. I was also travelling alone with my 7month old DD. Not easy but I was okay.
