Hello everyone,

I am in my late 30's and my period is not due for another 7 days.

However I think I might be pregnant (and if I am I will be over the moon) BUT the past few weeks I have been heavy smoking and drinking and I am feeling extremely anxious that If I am pregnant I may have caused damage. I already suffer with mild anxiety.

I have read that moderate drinking during the 2 week wait is ok (not ideal but ok) but I am concerned that my drinking has not been 'moderate' but excessive.

Not looking for anyone to give me a hard time, just would like to hear from people with facts/experience.

Thank you all in advance.

It should be ok but you should stop drinking now and cut down/stop smoking as far as you possibly can.

I went out to celebrate my birthday on the Saturday before I realised I was pregnant, probably had 7 pints. I would have been just under 4 weeks at that point and had quite a good few days of birthday celebrations. I'm 17 weeks now and everything looks fine with baby.

I was utterly bladdered the weekend I found out I was pg with ds2 we'd been trying for months to no avail. Though I do think you have to keep living your life while ttc and not let it consume you

The day before I took the pregnancy test I "helped" my fiance through 4 bottles of Rose. My mum had a Lung Cancer scare and was in the hospital. Anyway, I'm not 18 weeks and everything is fine. It's normal to worry, but I don't think you need to.

Just an extra bit of info. I took the test not expecting to get a positive- I didn't have any symptoms, I just like POAS and I have tons of those cheap little strips.

@Claire90ftm "I just like POAS" just made me lol GrinGrin

3/4 days before my positive test I was on holiday drinking half a bottle of rum one day and disaronno the next. I’m now 12 weeks and everything is fine. So I really wouldn’t worry :)

I was drinking while ttc. I didn't find out I was pregnant until nearly a month after i conceived so was drinking as I normally would. Even when I was pregnant I was drinking, way less than normal and weaker drinks that usual, but my baby was absolutely fine

TroubledLichen · 28/04/2018 15:24

Unless you’re under a fertility clinic that has advised you otherwise, don’t live your life around TTC. If it were me, I’d crack on as normal until you get a positive test.

If you aren't due on for another 7 days I think you'll be fine, if you're pregnant it is very early days.

I drank really, really excessively in the two week wait before I knew I was pregnant with DD, not a single drop after I took the test the day after I was due on. I was on honeymoon for most of it then went straight on to a hen weekend in Portugal. I just didn't think I'd get pregnant that month Hmm My DD has a hole in her heart and will be having open heart surgery soon. I'll never know for sure that my drinking caused it but from the reading I've done it might have and I'll always blame myself.

Most people who drink in the wait will probably be fine and I'm sure you'll be fine, but I would advise not drinking to excess in this period if you can just because if things aren't fine you'll carry it with you forever.

Gottokondo · 28/04/2018 17:20

It probably won't harm the child visibly but if you don't have to drink then I wouldn't. You aren't pregnant from the moment that you test, you are pregnant before that. But it is absolutely your choice.

SomeKnobend · 28/04/2018 17:37

There's no placenta for any alcohol to even transmit yet! If you are pregnant at this stage, the fertilised egg will be making it's way to wherever it fancies settling in the womb and then attaching and burrowing in while multiplying cells. Doesn't really matter how heavily you've been drinking in 1 week since ovulation, it's just physically not going to have affected anything at all at this stage. Good luck for your test next week.

Hi Everyone,

THANK YOU for all your comments!! I've decided from now until my period is due in 7 days I'm not going to drink and if I am pregnant then fantastic, if I am not I will be disappointed but will make sure I take it easier in the future during the TWW.

If I am pregnant one of the biggest challenges for me will be managing my anxiety/worry, not just because of the drinking but because I am worrier in general. Anyone else out there like that? Thanks everyone x

My first pregnancy resulting in DD1 occurred not long after my second miscarriage. DH and I were feeling pretty down and drunk our way through the two week Christmas holiday. I also had knee surgery requiring general anaesthetic, the day after it finally twigged why my period might be so late 😳 So I was going on for 5 weeks, I stopped as soon as I tested positive and DD1 is perfectly fine.

TinyTerror1 · 28/04/2018 19:19

There are a lot of worriers on the boards OP, you'll be in good company ;)
