SPD?

I'm currently 24 weeks pregnant. Over the last few weeks I've had a few twinges across my pelvis, that I can only describe as feeling like toothache in my pelvis. It was fairly short lived, but was triggered when going from sitting to standing quickly (I think). I woke this morning with back pain and all day have had pain across my lower back which seems to have moved to my hip. Its a dull ache with the odd twinge. Does this sound like the start of SPD?

My SPD wasn't constant at the start, only when I moved. If I tried to turn over in bed for example. Later it got constant but it was more between my legs. I had to put a sanitary towel in the freezer! Sorry I'm no help.

Could be. I had a sore tailbone from about 13 weeks with DD. 29 weeks now with DC2 and it's round the front this time. Took about six months after DD's birth to not wince sttting down.

Mention it to the midwife next appointment. They can fit you for tubigrip to support bump a bit and refer to physio for exercise. I am finding staying mobile is helping, but I know it can be really disabling if it's bad.

Thanks, I have the midwife next week so will mention it (along with checking that Gaviscon every time I eat something is ok!). I had tailbone pain earlier in the pregnancy but that seems to have gone now. Today has been the day when the discomfort has lasted all day. I just coughed and the pains that went through my hip were most unusual.

My SPD felt like I was being split in half from my vagina upwards. I had it with both pregnancies. I ended up using crutches and a pelvic belt just so I could walk.

Sympathies with the gaviscon. My intestines haven't worked since about six weeks and I'm in constant pain now. Would be happy to evict this one as soon as he's cooked enough!

Yes vox it does sound like the beginning of it - mine started around 24 weeks too. This is my 2nd pregnancy so I'm managing it much better this time.

In my experience midwives/obstetricians are not very clued up (or interested) in SPD. You need a Physio or an osteo with experience in treating it.

See if it gets worse but somethings that have worked for me (I'm 32 weeks):

  • limiting walking as much as possible. Seems counter intuitive as everyone says "stay active" but too much walking can aggravate it. Swimming is good exercise but no breaststroke!
  • avoid stairs, crossing your legs - try to always stay square and symmetrical!
  • Physio + Pilates- a good Physio will do massage/release work to relieve the pain and the Pilates will help stop it getting worse
  • a support belt can be helpful - I have the Serola belt and it really helps.

I really recommend proactively managing it so it doesn't get work - with my first pregnancy I did everything wrong (long walks with the dog etc) and I was immobile by week 38, plus it took a good 6 weeks for the pain to subside after I had DS.
