Hi everyone,
I am being monitored closely as I had severe pre-eclampsia with DS, resulting in HELLP syndrome & him being delivered at 30 wks...
I am now 30 wks pregnant with no.2 and at my last scan the doctor said the baby is 2 weeks behind in growth & below the 10th centile for gestation. I am awaiting a further scan & tests on Thursday. DS did not have IUGR despite my pre-eclampsia, so this is new territory for us. Please could anyone else who has or is going through something similar please enlighten me on causes & what might happen? I have been told to rest as much as possible on my left-side to promote blood flow... I am hoping this is all just a blip but would like to know more if possible (& googling it always turns up the worst diagnoses etc.!)

Thank you for reading this long post! xx

no idea im afraid....

all sounds very stressful and worrying...i hope someone posts soon who knows a little more than me!

in the mean time rest up girl as the dr advised, and stay away from google!!!

at the very least i suppose its good that the doc knows about it and can monitor you etc.

hope you dont get too worried...take care x

A one off scan is not as important as serial scans, much more worrying if babys growth is tailing off in a big way than if it is consistently just below tenth centile. Hope it works out ok

As has been said, a one off growth scan shows nothing and 10th centile at 30 weeks could just be a natural size IYSWIM.

However, dd had IUGR. Hers was evident at my 20 week scan where she measured on about the 3rd centile. At the time they weren't sure if it meant anything as both dh and I are small. Luckily they erred on the side of caution and kept scanning me. Round about 34 weeks or so her growth slowed a bit and they were able to perform specialist doppler scans which were able to trace the flow from the placenta through the placenta and then round dd. These were fine. Anyway, they kept scanning me. At 37 weeks I went in for a scan and they performed the doppler scans to find that there was a problem (shown by the fact that the flow was more concentrated round the brain which shows there was a problem as the body knows this is where it is needed most - quite remarkable). I was admitted to be induced and my blood pressure was up.

To cut a very long story short, induction didn't work and dd was born a few days later by c-sec, weighing 4 lbs 9oz.

Most importantly, she was absolutely fine. She went to SCBU for a couple of hours to raise her body temperature but then was back with me. She grew like mad after that and has had absolutely no problems.

I was told that they don't know what causes IUGR but its probably to do with pre-eclampsia and that although I had no blood pressure problems until 37 weeks I may have had pre-eclampsia all along and this was how it manifested itself (in dd's growth).

Try not to worry (easier said than done). They will keep the baby inside as long as it is growing but will deliver if growth stops.

BTW, a friend of mine had similar problems with her dd1. She has just had dd2 and was told all along she was having the same problems until she got to 36 weeks when they scanned her and said the baby would be about 7lbs. She was born last week weighing 6lbs 13 oz.

Hope that helps (sorry I've gone on so much). Good luck !

DS had IUGR. My midwife measured me as 28 weeks when I was 34 weeks pregnant. Was sent for a scan which confirmed the baby was measuring 4 weeks behind (all measurements were 30w 4-5d). They did a dopppler scan and straight away could see that the blood lfow in the placenta was poor. We had the additional worry that DS was small all over. Apparently they worry less if the head measures more as there is a brain saving effect. All in all it was worrying but they did doppler scans twice a week for a further month. DS continued to grow at a slow rate but by 37.5 weeks, the growth had virtually stopped and they decided he was to be born. He weighed 4lb 13oz and had a 10 day stay in SCBU due to his size and reluctance to feed. He was otherwise perfect and grew brilliantly after a couple of weeks.

The cause was found to be big clots in my placenta which probably started affecting things in the 3rd trimester.

Try not to worry and don't look all over the internet like I did- ensure they monitor you closely and if it does turn out to be IUGR, they will only induce you if the growth is really slow.

Thank you for your replies ladies, it does help hearing of others experiences.

I was being scanned every 2 weeks due to my previous history, and the baby had been on the 50th centile until the last scan (last Thurs) and I think that is what made them worry- the sudden tailing off of the graph. But I am hoping that maybe as measurements via scanner can be quite variable that it could be a blip...Will find out on Thurs when they are scanning us again and doing a full doppler scan for blood flow. They did a quick doppler scan of the uterine artery last Thurs and apparently all was fine, so I am hoping this is only a blip. I am glad to hear though that they try to keep the baby inside for as long as possible if it is still growing as after DS being born at 30 weeks I'd like to get a good bit beyond that if possible! I know the docs are thinking this could be early signs of pre-eclampsia again but hopefully not!

Thanks for all the advice
xxx
