Prenatal Vitamin Guilt?

Hi all,

I am 10 weeks today with my first and I am starting to feel concerned that I'm not 'equipping' my body very well for this pregnancy.

Folic acid makes me violently sick within a few hours of taking it so my body cannot take any benefits from taking it.

At my recent booking appointment, my midwife advised me to stop taking folic acid immediately and mentioned that some women cannot take it without being violently sick. So, to-date, I haven't managed to successfully provide any extra folate for this little one.

On the basis that I was not taking folic acid, the midwife then asked me if I am taking Vitamin D. With this being my first pregnancy, I had no idea that Vitamin D was a recommended nutrient. When I replied to say I hadn't been taking any Vitamin D because I wasn't aware it was recommended, she rolled her eyes and tutted! She has advised me to take a slightly higher dose to ensure I am 'stocking up' on essential vitamins.

I'm trying to eat very healthily in hope I can do some damage control, but that's not always easy in the first tri!

Does anybody else feel extremely guilty about not taking prenatal vitamins for most of the first trimester?

How do ladies who didn't find out they were pregnant until 12 weeks feel knowing they'd not been taking any vitamins?

Oh bless your heart, don't feel guilty. It's not your fault and it's much worse you being so sick than skipping the vitamins. Have you tried food alternatives? I know kale is full of folic acid and you may find you can digest that without being sick

I'm not sure the eye roll was necessary from the MW

I guess you are spot on with the sickness zapping nutrients. I will give kale and other leafy greens a try. Thank you! Fingers crossed I’m doing enough with diet now my appetite is creeping back up!

Asparagus, broccoli and citrus fruits are all high in folate, too. Maybe try those instead?
