Hello,

Are there any ladies out there who have been consultant led through their pregnancy due to elevated BMI?

What happened at your first consultant appointment?

Feeling anxious

Not due to BMI, but I was consultant led for my second and third, and it was a completely positive and reassuring experience.
It means you'll be having someone with the most experience looking after you, with more checks so less likelihood of any issues going unnoticed.

@BubblesAndSquarks yes, I'm happy I will be well looked after, I just feel unsure about what to expect

I would think they will discuss what elements of your pregnancy may be higher risk, what they are planning to do monitoring wise, and ask if you have any questions or concerns.

I know its hard when its unknown but try not to feel anxious, both my consultants were lovely its just like talking to a midwife.

Yes me, they went through all the potential issues and risks with me and booked me for a GTT at 28 weeks and extra growth scans.

I’m under consultant care for BMI and mostly they have nothing to do with me. I’ve had a five minute chat with a consultant three times (after scans) but I’m mostly dealt with by midwives. I’ve had two GTTs and extra scans to check growth but baby is normal so they have not said much. I also voluntarily signed up for a weight support session at the local children’s centre. Mostly everyone has been very nice - they have discussed my weight with me and I realise it’s importance, only the consultant I saw today was unkind about it. She was blunt and at 36 weeks she didn’t really suggest anything I have time to act on.

May I ask what the bmi cut off is for consultant led care? I suspect that is what I will be if I ever getting the booking in appointment.

Yes, I'm consultant led due to high BMI. At my first appointment i first met a midwife he checked my urine and blood sugar. Then a consultant came in and explained the higher risks and monitoring. It took a 5 minutes and she basically said i'd have a GTT test and a couple of growth scans in the third trimester and I'd meet with her after them. She said the growth scans are to keep an eye on size of baby as bump size can sometimes be less accurate if BMI is raised which makes sense!

I think its either 30 or 35, depending on hospital. Mine was between 30 and 35 at booking in and they said I'm borderline but likely to go over 35 once I gain weight.

TinyPawz · 26/04/2018 16:03

My bmi is 36 I think.

jamoncrumpets · 26/04/2018 16:28

It's nothing to worry about at all, just like a midwife appointment really.

bengalcat · 26/04/2018 16:33

Cutoff is usually 35

Reader1984 · 26/04/2018 17:32

Hello, I have a high BMI so had my first appointment with the consultant last week. It was a bit of a waste of time really. He looked at my notes, asked how I was. Then just confirmed 3 extra scans later in my pregnancy. Nothing else really, so don't worry!
