Whooping cough vaccine - WWYD?

Hi all - looking for some advice. I had a bad reaction to the whooping cough vaccine as a child sadly I'm not sure what kind of bad, I'm unsure whether I should have it now?

My mum isn't around for me to ask and my dad can't remember. I'm completely pro vaccines, I'm not sure whether I'll react badly this time and if I do it will be dangerous for baby?

I think you need to ask your midwife this question. the kind of reaction you had should be in your medical notes if it was that bad.

Speak to your GP or midwife, they can look at your history and help you make an informed decision

Roughly when did you have the jab?

The whooping cough element of DPT has changed to an acellular version. It is likely that you had the older form, so the previous reaction may not be relevant.

I think you should talk to your GP

Good advice - thanks. I've moved to a totally new area, I've got no idea if my very early medical records will have followed. I'm 33 so it was some time ago, good to know that it has changed formulation. Will definitely see what the midwife thinks.

I'm same age and had the jab when I was a child and was very I'll after. The jab has changed since. I had whooping cough in the 2012 outbreak and new a baby seriously ill in that outbreak so when I was pregnant had the jab again. No reaction was absolutely fine.

I was told it’s a different type of vaccine these days so you shouldn’t expect a reaction to it. Although it made my arm very painful for a week! Best chat to midwife just to make sure

I had a bad reaction to a vaccine as a child (measles not whooping cough though) and my parents were advised not to vaccinate me by the Doctors treating my seizures.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second and have had the vaccination in both this and my first pregnancy with zero ill effects whatsoever.

Your records should have followed, I grew up all over Europe (df was in the military) but my complete records managed to make all the way to my current Doctors.

Have a chat with your GP. My GP and I have become great friends throughout my pregnancy as I have had a cough the whole way through that has been tested for whooping cough, Tb etc... he strongly advised I had the whooping cough vaccine as he explained the immunity would help protect baby in the early weeks. I’m a great advocate for having a chat to the GP about all manner of things now 😊 your midwife will most likely suggest you talk to your GP in all honesty
