I have just found out this morning that i am 4 weeks pregnant, my DH and I are so pleased but also very nervous - I have had 3 miscarriages in the last 18 months, and recently had some private blood screening that showed i had "old ovaries" which was part of the reason and said my blood might be too thick so i was prescribed 70mg of asprin each day to thin my blood. apparently its quite a common thing for ladies who miscarry 3 or more times to take.

Just wondered if anybody had taken asprin while pregnant and if all was ok!! reading things on google tell me either its the best thing or i should stop for the between 4-6 weeks so blood can thicken???

Im confussed please help.

I think you are best to ask your midwife. I have been prescribed aspirin to protect against clots during pregnancy but only from 12 weeks so I don't know if that means you shouldn't be taking it at this point. Or perhaps you could call the clinic who prescribed you the aspirin in the first place?

MsJuniper · 25/04/2018 15:22

I was prescribed 150mg from BFP to 34 weeks by the recurrent mc clinic and have just had a healthy baby. I would check with whoever prescribed you the aspirin and follow their directions. I wish you all the best for a smooth and uneventful pregnancy.

Lots of women have aspirin in pregnancy and it’s perfectly safe

LisaSimpsonsbff · 25/04/2018 16:03

I was also prescribed 75mg aspirin from BFP after three miscarriages - I'm now 28 weeks pregnant. There's no proof it helped, of course, but it certainly doesn't seem to have hurt. I really wouldn't trust Google (or indeed Mumsnet - I appreciate the irony of this post!) over the doctor who prescribed you the aspirin; they're really reluctant to prescribe in pregnancy, so no doctor would have given you it if there was evidence of harm.

I was prescribed aspirin after 3 miscarriages. I took it daily until 20weeks pregnant. Not sure why I stopped, think I just kept forgetting to take it by that time.

LJFM2B · 25/04/2018 16:50

Thanks ladies. LisaSimpsonsbff the irony is true haha but I know exactly what you mean. There can be some people who jump online for there own opinion not always having facts.

I suppose was just looking for a little reassurance that it wasn’t going to hurt in anyway, we’re so desperate for this to be our rainbow baby!!! And will carry on taking the aspirin with no worries now. At least I know here have been positive stories!! Xx

I was prescribed aspirin (think it was 75mg) I took it all through my pregnancy until I had surgery at 32 weeks.

@LJFM2B I was prescribed it from 12 weeks by my booking midwife due to fulfilling one of the risk factors that my NHS area.

The GP I saw was confused why I was prescribed it as while my family has a history of heart disease it is only after the menopause or in old age. So she had to call the midwife team who got back a couple of days later who explained to her I met one of the risk factors in the tick box criteria for the area. (The risk factors ignore things like age of parents/close family members who had heart disease which shows how risky taking low dose daily aspirin in pregnancy is.)

Before I got the prescription I did some digging looking at research papers and some other NHS trusts criteria for prescribing it in pregnancy. There are some research papers I found that indicate if you have had previous miscarriages then you should be on it as it improves the chances of you having a successful pregnancy. (Sorry can't remember the exact details.)

In regards to thickening your blood in 4-6 weeks none of the NHS trust information or research papers mentioned it at all. In fact some mentioned treating women daily aspirin before IVF treatment to increase their chance of implantation and then to continue through their pregnancy.

The only time you should stop taking it is when there is a chance of you going into labour, which is 36 weeks. This is to ensure your own blood will clot properly.

Anyway as already stated talk to the person who prescribed it to you, and ask how many weeks you should take it for. Also don't stop taking it early, as my OH has a daughter who stopped growing around 25 weeks and was born prematurely 3 weeks later.

I was put on it after 3 miscarriages and came off it at 34 weeks. The Early pregnancy unit said at the time that out of the 10 women in their trial group 7 of us had gone on to full term after being put on it.

They also told me at the time that it was also ok to take Lemsip at the same time if I had a cold. I love Lemsip Grin when I am poorly. Check this is still the case with your midwife.

I then fell pregnant again and put myself on it. Again went on to full term.

This is all really helpful!! Thanks all so much...

Really 95% of what i have read has been positive regarding aspirin its just that stupid 5% that plays on my mind. But your comments have really helped.

As you will all know after suffering miscarriage, that unfortunately the next pregnancy is a big worry ... after reading your posts i have found some comfort in being a little more confident and i wont be stopping until 36 weeks (thats when my Dr told me to stop for same reasons mentioned) ...

Thanks again - keep your fingers crossed for me, 4th time lucky Smile
