Restless legs

I saw my midwife this morning and mentioned that my restless legs are getting worse (28+1). I am waiting for my blood results to come back to say if Iron is a factor, but if not I have seen that some people have suggested trying Magnesium?
Can I have some advice on what's best to buy/things to try for restless legs?

Hello! I'm suffering with the same, it's hideous, I'm 28+4...

I have found magnesium really helps and have been using the Better For You spray magnesium at night time. I have the sensitive version because it can sting. There is a theory that the more you need mag the more it stings until you sort your levels out and I whether it's true or not it now doesn't sting at all. Not sure if I'm getting used to it or my levels are getting better. I bought it from Amazon, but you may be able to get it somewhere like Holland & Barratt if you want it today!

Good luck!

Thank you @AK79
I was thinking the magnesium would be a tablet supplement... is it literally just a spray you spray all over before bed?

You can get tablets, but my mum suffers terribly with it and after lots of trialling she found the spray to be more effective.

With the one I have you have to build up to 20 sprays a day and I do it just before getting into bed and then massage it in. I just spray it to the areas of my legs where I get restless legs.

Thank you! I have just had a look and it says 10 sprays morning and night. Did you start with a lower amount of sprays and just built it up gradually?
They aren't at the point where they are massively effecting my life, but the further I get the worse it seems to be getting so I'd ideally like to nip it in the bud! lol

I do all my sprays at night, obviously haven't read the box properly, but it's working so I'll stick with it. And yep, it stung initially so only did a couple of sprays and then built up over a week. I now do 20 at bedtime.

Perfect, have just ordered some!
Thank you :)

@AKP79
Sorry to jump on is this 100% safe for pregnancy as I'm so desperate for the same reason I'm 28+5 and my restless legs at night time have me crying because I'm so frustrated and so desperate for it to just stop I've tried so much and find massaging seems to make is worse

0310Star · 26/04/2018 12:32

@Waterfountain97 I have just ordered some and it says on the box that's its perfectly safe in pregnancy, I also asked my midwife yesterday who said Magnesium is fine.
Have you checked your iron though? I think that is normally the first port of call just in case you need some extra tablets it may help?

I find it worse in the evening when I am watching TV, at night I have managed to make it more bearable by putting a pillow between my knees so could be worth a try!
Il keep you posted on how the Magnesium spray works!

Yes definitely safe in pregnancy. Give it a go. Restless legs is horrible.

Waterfountain97 · 26/04/2018 14:41

@0310Star
I had my bloods taken yesterday where I believe they will write or call me if iron levels are low so we will see and I've tried the pillows and it just doesn't work anymore did for about 3 nights and that was it only thing I find works is if j have a bath at about 11pm sit in there for an hour obvs at safe heat then use the shower hose once bath is empty on a hot temp and put it on the spots I suffer most then after that I'm basically exhausted so I normally fall straight to sleep 😔 But obviously being almost 29 weeks pregnant it's getting so hard getting in and out of tub

0310Star · 26/04/2018 16:00

@Waterfountain97 I had the same blood test yesterday at my 28 week appointment and my midwife said she would call if the I needed extra iron so I am sure yours will do the same.
Its such a horrible symptom, they say cutting out caffeine may help too but unfortunately for me I suffer severe headaches when I cut out nicotine entirely so the restless legs is the lesser of 2 evils!
I just ordered the one that @AKP79 linked from amazon and it will be here tomorrow. Midwife said its fine to use so I am just going to give it a go and see if it helps!

I feel your pain! I really struggled with this in my pregnancy. Some of the things that helped me are: a really vigorous foot and leg rub from my DH, eating a banana an hour or 2 (something to do with potassium or magnesium I think but happy to be corrected!) before bed and magnesium spray on my feet. I don't know if any of those work or it was physiological but having the routine of those 3 things as well as a bath seemed to help it some night. If my foot was bad I also used to roll it quite firmly on an empty deodorant. I've found it the worst pregnancy side effect and had many sleepless nights so I hope you find some relief soon!

ilovepixie · 26/04/2018 17:15

I have restless legs and I put a bar of soap under my bed sheet at my feet. I was sceptical at first but it really does work

MilfordFound · 26/04/2018 20:28

I was prescribed compression stockings for varicose veins, and wearing them completely stopped my restless legs it was amazing!

Hairgician · 26/04/2018 22:12

Another user of the spray here! 10 sprays each leg every night . Sometimes a couple more. I get mine from h&b. Get the sensitive one. There is a bedtime one it it has essential oils in which some people react to.

SlimGin · 26/04/2018 23:03

Ah I'm so glad this thread is here! I have had restless legs every now and then for the past 7 or 8 years. Nobody else seemed to know what I was talking about. Now I'm pregnant for first time I've been worried it would get worse. I went to the cinema tonight and considered watching the film whilst jogging on the spot! Will definitely try the magnesium spray!

0310Star · 27/04/2018 08:52

I tried having a banana last night about and hour or so before bed and I have to say I THINK it helped, it didn't get rid of it but it did make it more comfortable.
My magnesium spray is arriving today so fingers crossed I have some success with that!
@Hairgician did you also have to gradually build up the sprays or did you just go straight to 10 on each?

OP posts:
Hairgician · 27/04/2018 15:59

0310 no straight in with 20 sprays. It might tingle the first few goes if you are deficient. But that will pass. Ive also found walking around cold floors in bare feet helps too.
