I'm being cheeky i know, but I thought I'd be efficient!!

First of all, I'm taking a couple of short domestic flights next week and in three weeks time (to Jersey) I'll be 22 weeks and 25 weeks respectively. Should I take my maternity notes?

As I'm finally having my 20 week scan (2 weeks late!) on thursday, so I can finally allow myself to think about things I need for the baby. I've made a tiny list of things I'll need in the first few weeks, the absolute basics. Have I missed anything?

Cot
Pushchair
Car seat
Changing mat
newborn nappies
Creams, potions and lotions (various)
Steriliser
Bottles
Newborn clothes
Bedding

xx

Unless you know you are going to have a really small baby I wouldn't buy too many newborn sized clothes. Mine went straight into 0-3 month clothes.

Take your notes just in case.

Twinmummyx2 · 14/05/2007 12:45

Yes always take your notes, hopefully you won't need them, but if you do the maternity here in Jersey is lovely.xx

Bibs...lots of.xx

gingeme · 14/05/2007 12:46

You must take your notes everywhere you go. Well ok maybe not to the local shops unless your near you DD or past it.

You need to choose what formula if your no BF. Sling? Get some cheap hand towels for spit up and or sick. Film for your camera or batteries for digital camera. Think youve got everything covered other than that. Good luck. Jersey is beautiful by the way. Lucky you

Puppie · 14/05/2007 12:50

Maternity Pads? I think these are the heavy duty ones arent they? (you can tell its my first pregnancy)

bananabump · 14/05/2007 12:51

I would take your notes, mummynat on here has just had her baby at 26 weeks.

I started getting baby stuff as soon as I found out, in a bit of a panic! You get given an awful lot so don't go nuts with babyclothes, especially not newborn ones as everybody buys those and 0-3 months.

Are you going to get a moses basket? You don't have to but cots can look massive on newborns.

Also with lotions and potions...you don't actually need all that many at first. Babywipes or cotton wool and water, perhaps some sudocrem for nappy rash. Baby lotion, baby oil, talc, shampoo and baby bath etc all introduce unnecessary chemicals to newborn skin, they really don't need it until they're a bit older and start to move around more and get a bit grubby/sweaty.

Puppie · 14/05/2007 12:54

Oh I'm an IDIOT! Just realised that you wouldn't have given birth by then!!

Puppie · 14/05/2007 12:57

MrsMar Sorry for littering your post with my nonsensical ramblings....yes you WILL have given birth by then. Think I~should just go home...am no use to anybody today ...clearly. Aaaargh pregnancy brain!

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 12:57

Hi all, great advice. I'll take my notes, I'm only going for a couple of days each time (it's wedding season, yay!) but it can't hurt. Do I have to take them every time I leave the house from now on? eek! better get a bigger handbag!

Re baby stuff, banana, I am getting a moses basket, totally forgot to put it down. My sister is giving me loads of stuff including a moses basket she used for her girls.

As for potions, I kind of thought I'd just get wipes and a stash of cotton wool and some sudocreme. I'm not really meant to bath them for for the first few weeks am I? Just top and tail?

gingeme, I was going to try to bf, but I guess it doesn't do any harm to have some formula on standby incase of bf dramas.

I wasn't going to buy too many clothes (actually I think I'll get them from my sister too) as I have heard that everyone buys you loads. Just wanted a few on standby in case my assumptions are wrong, and I end up with a poor shivering naked baby!!
Thanks for the advice, always welcome!!!

lol@puppie

def pregnant..lol

Uki · 14/05/2007 12:58

Your list looks great (not to big), To be honest I never used a change mat (nappy or towel did) or any lotion or potion other than an occasional nappy rash cream and natural shampoo, and never bought a steralizer just boiled bottles in saucepan.

I did however have a soft carry cot(kind of like a flat bottomed bag, quite small) , and found that excellent as baby could come everywhere in house with me, i could even change baby in it, was good also as i had a car seat that stayed in car so couldn't use that when visiting others.

have fun in jersey.

Twinmummy- what a lovely place to live.

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 12:59

hehehe puppie!! don't worry, I'm so daft at the moment, I'm leaving a trail of stuff I've forgotten behind me everywhere I go. I'm just about to start the drive around to collect everything I've left behind at various houses over the weekend... clothes... purse....mobile.... diary.... head!!

Nbg · 14/05/2007 13:01

Just to be really picky lol, I would recommend muslin cloths rather than bibs. Great for catching and mopping up sick
Plus lots of baby and you coverage!

You might also want to look at something to put your baby in in the day like a rocker or playmat.

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:01

Hi UKI, I did um and ah about the changer, but that's another inheritance from my sister, as is the steriliser, so I thought I'd put them on (as I kind of have them already)

I guess you live in Jersey twinmummy? My dh is from there, we're going to a party in Trinity this weekend and a wedding in St Brelade in three weeks... I really like going there, so pretty!

Mum2FunkyDude · 14/05/2007 13:10

I had to use scratch mittens in the beginning ds had long nails and scratched his face quite badly before he was born ( he was 10 days late)
receiving blanket(swaddling blanket)

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:10

My dh used to live in St Saviour so I know st helier pretty well! We spent a year commuting between jersey and London to see each other, I think I got the better end of the deal, although dh used to joke that I was a weather jinx, it was always terrible when I went over. I've been fog delayed at gatwick sooo many times! I've got a fantastic selection of photos of me standing windswept next to various sites! I really hope i don't ruin our friends wedding with my uncanny ability to bring rain with me where ever I go! eek!

thanks for that beckles, I didn't have that on my list!

OP posts:
MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:15

Twinmummyx2 · 14/05/2007 13:16

sorry to keep going on... I'm just off to the supermarket, do I really have to take my mat notes with me at 21+5?

OP posts:
bananabump · 14/05/2007 13:54

lol Don't be silly...just take them if you're going away for a few days where you can't nip back and get them within an hour or so's drive.

Didn't mean to make you paranoid!

MrsMar · 14/05/2007 13:56

phew! cheers bananabump!! I thought I'd have to get myself a bigger bag, I already seem to have half the contents of my bathroom and wardrobe in there, not much more room!!!

alondonmum · 14/05/2007 14:03
