Think I’ve mucked up GTT test!

Just been reading through my ante natal notes and it says that before the GTT I wasn't allowed to eat anything after 10.00pm. I thought it was midnight, so as we'd eaten tea really early, I had a weetabix at 10.30 and Gaviscon at about 10.45. Do you think that matters?

Yes it will matter I'm afraid. You are going to have to reschedule.

Oh bugger! I don’t know why I had it in my head it was midnight!! I had the test on Friday and due to get results on Monday. I’m so annoyed with myself.

For my GTT I was told to turn up 'between 8.30 and 9.30am', so arriving at the end of that window would have meant the same duration of fasting as someone who turned up at 8.30 and hadn't eaten after 10pm.

It's not just about the fasting levels, but also how well you metabolise the sugar drink you're given: in fact, that's the key bit.

I'd let the hospital know and ask them if they want to re-test.

What time was the test?

gryffen · 21/04/2018 19:30

There must be 12hrs between last food and test so if last food was 10pm and test wasn't done til after 10 then your ok

Gaviscon is actually ok according to my consultant but depends on what notes say (some may say stop meds unless necessary etc).

Just call hospital on Monday and if tests are clear or not then just explain and they may drag you back in again.

Can you tell I messed up mine lol

CrmbleBee · 21/04/2018 20:46

Didn't they ask you before doing the test when you'd last eaten? They did with mine.

AKP79 · 21/04/2018 20:52

My test was at 8.45am. I’ve just remembered my friend used to be a midwife so have called her, she seems to think it won’t be a problem.

They didn’t ask me for timings when they did the test, they just asked if I’d fastest. Because I had midnight in my head I said yes. Feel like such a wally!

I wouldn't retest for the sake of half hour to be honest, it's just pumping baby full of unnecessary sugar

BrutusMcDogface · 21/04/2018 22:00

For some reason I thought you were having the test tomorrow (which would make zero sense; I'm blaming baby brain for the stupidity! 😂)

I wasn't allowed to eat after 9 (my test started at 9) and it did clearly say on the letter that eating or taking gaviscon after 9 would affect the test. Maybe just call someone for reassurance?

AKP79 · 21/04/2018 22:36

Ha ha

I think I’m going to wait until Monday. If I get a call to say I’ve got it then I’ll explain about the mix up. If I don’t get the call then I haven’t got it and I’m going to assume what I ate had no impact.

I’ve got a midwife appointment on Tues so will be able to discuss it all with her. The thought of having to sit in that waiting room for over 2 hours again though!

Also what’s weird is everyone’s saying it’s a 12 hour fast. My letter (which I obviously didn’t read properly) said only water after 10pm and my test was at 8.45am. So less than 12 hours. I was hoping that they factored in some room for error for stupid people like me! But not looking likely.

Its an 8 hr fast in my trust- using 75g of glucose dose. So recommend fast from midnight first blood test at 0800.
