Boring steriliser question.

Last time we were on a shoe string and I thought I would never use one because I was breastfeeding. But I ended up boiling dummies and occasional bottles in a saucepan and I think it would just be easier to get a steriliser this time. I've bought three different microwave sterilisers but none of them fit in the bloody microwave so back to the shop they went. So now I have a choice between a plug in counter top one or a cold water bucket type. Which should I go for?

Just use a big tuppaware tub, its exactly the same just put somthing in the bottom to life the stuff out of the water.

We have a microwave one and like you had trouble with fit, OH had to dremmel off the feet to make it fit :)

Iamnotacerealkiller · 19/04/2018 16:02

With dummies i just out them in a mug and pour the kettle over them.
for bottles you can buy ones that 'self' sterilize in the microwave. MAM do some.

Doje · 19/04/2018 16:02

We used a cold water steriliser. It was really easy just to dump bottles in after washing. You just need to change the water once a day and it becomes habit.

Oysterbabe · 19/04/2018 16:04

I'd get a cold water one. We used one on holiday as it was easier to just take tablets with us and never went back to the microwave one.

I've been looking at the MAM self sterilizing bottles, they look pretty good and no need for any bulky equipment.

starfishmummy · 19/04/2018 16:10

We had a steamer and a cold water type. If I was buying again I'd go cold water type as it was much easier to pop things in and know they'd be fine in there until we needed them. When the liquid was changed it was still potent enough to soak cups and spoons in to get rid of stains and my sink was always beautifully clean!! As cerealkiller says you don't have to buy the dedicated container if you have a suitable Tupperware with lid.

Mam dummies can be microwaved

PinkSkyAtNightAngelDelight · 19/04/2018 16:50

I found the cold water steriliser much less of a faff then the microwave one.

Topbiscuit · 19/04/2018 16:55

I used the microwave steriliser bags - handy for occasionally doing small stuff & don’t take up any room. The munchkin ones are good.

Kpo58 · 19/04/2018 19:24

I like my steam steriliser. I just don't like the idea of dipping bottles in random chemicals to sterilise them. I'd worry that they would kill off the good bacteria in the baby when they drink from the bottles.

LollyLarkin · 20/04/2018 06:30

Milton cold water steriliser all the way! It gets rid of stuff that the steam sterilisers can’t like fungal spores that cause thrush, I had ductal thrush for months and the only thing that helped clear it was cleaning everything that went near my son’s mouth with Milton.

It smells quite strong but is totally safe to ingest when the bottles are still wet. Have a look on their website for reassurance www.milton-tm.com/en/consumer/faqs

As PP have said, you can use the leftover fluid to do your teaspoons and surfaces. Just be careful you don’t let the neat liquid go on any clothes because it will bleach them.

Redken24 · 20/04/2018 06:34

We had a milton cold water but I bet one of the microwave ones can be used for that purpose

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 20/04/2018 06:37

Not sure I’d bother with a steriliser. I had one with DD1 but then just used Milton with DD2 much easier and v cheap.

gryffen · 20/04/2018 11:48

I have the Milton kit for this time round - had a electric steam sterilizer first time round and you need to descale it regularly and not worth the time.

Milton and a bucket works best imho

mommybear1 · 20/04/2018 12:07

We have a Dr Browns steam steraliser it's fab and no nasty smells etc when the bottles etc are done if you buy it from boots you get the points and there is a triple pointsweekend coming up

ISeeTheLight · 20/04/2018 14:22

Milton is straightforward, however DD refused anything that came into contact with it - she didn't like the taste. That said she was a bit older - refused dummies at first and I exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months so she wasn't used to it. Maybe if they get used to it from newborn it's easier.

FWIW we had a Philips electric one and it was great.

mehhh · 20/04/2018 14:24

I'd get mam bottles next time round I got tommee tippee electric steam steriliser which is fab but does my head in being out on the side all the time

Battleax · 20/04/2018 14:27

I had both but I much preferred the electric steam one to a Milton tank; Less faff, cheap to run, no need to keep buying fluid, odourless and most importantly QUICKER.

mehhh · 18/06/2018 11:44

I use the tommee tippee electric steriliser purely because it's black and matches the rest of our appliances... my dd has had tt bottles combined with breast from birth, I tried to swap to maam (so I could use the self sterilising bottles) but she wouldn't take to them unfortunately!
