best place to buy baby clothes

Am obviously also going to look locally for bargains (eBay/charity shops and the like) but just wondered where you'd rate for baby clothes. So far, bought some first size sleepers from George and 0-3 (as no idea how big he might be yet!) from Waitrose. Waitrose seem better quality but not sure.

What's mother care like? Any other recommendations?

Know they grow out of them quickly so don't want to go mad and expect he will spend majority of his time to start with in bodysuits? (as you can see, I have no clue what I'm doing!!)

Supermarkets for basics morrisons nutmeg do some gorgeous things. Do you have a MacArthur Glenn our let near you as they are brilliant for bargains. Gap outlet always seem to have huge reductions and I have had some amazing bargains from the clearance part of the Ralph Lauren shop. If you order regularly (once every six months) from next online they will send you an early bird slot for the sale. Managed to get over £60 worth of items for less than £30 there last time

LexieLulu · 18/04/2018 16:54

I don't like mothercare clothes, the sizing seems much smaller than others and they don't seem to take into account nappies. Like their bottoms are quite low rise on my DD.

H&M is lovely, but their sizing is weird (2-4 months?!)

Primark is fab for basics, but buy a size up. We buy the kids spare nursery clothes from primark.

George/Asda is lovely, in fact all the supermarkets have great kids stuff. And I've noticed more doing integrated hand mitts in babygrows, when DS was born I had to get his from m&s/next

LexieLulu · 18/04/2018 16:55

I love Zara for little boy leggings, they are about £6 a pair but they are so much nicer than jeans/pants on a baby

FusRoDah · 18/04/2018 17:08

Next and mothercare were my favourites for the newborn/1month/0-3 month stuff. There's generally quite a lot of next sleepsuit bundles on eBay. Integrated scratch mitts are a must!

BertieBotts · 18/04/2018 18:31

H&M just have the Swedish norms rather than British ones. So they size with centimetres which correlates better to 2-4, the fastening norms are different and other countries don't seem to have the sleepsuit thing like we have here - I find it really hard to find a good selection in Germany. Everything is "stramplers" instead which are bodysuits plus soft dungarees- very sweet but totally annoying in terms of getting on and off! What is wrong with a babygrow FGS?!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 18/04/2018 18:33

I got some beautiful, soft 100% cotton; vests, leggings and baby grows from Lidl for a couple of quid each.

Mamabear1475 · 18/04/2018 18:33

Next are a bit pricier but they wash well, also m&s

Jenniferb21 · 18/04/2018 18:36

Next is amazing. Washes well. Lasts ages in great condition and very sellable on eBay if you don’t want to save them afterwards

I find the fit and sizing to be brilliant

Mammabear31 · 18/04/2018 18:44

Matalan do some lovely outfits and sleepsuit. Good quality and half the price of Next!

Creatureofthenight · 18/04/2018 20:22

@TinyPawz I agree, there’s very little unisex but that’s true of most supermarkets I think.

Fluffybat · 18/04/2018 20:41

Love Asda George for basics like vests and babgros. Sainsburies and Morrisons are also fab.

LeighaJ · 18/04/2018 20:49

www.mum2mummarket.co.uk

They have sales events all over the UK, we didn't need clothes when we went but there were absolutely loads of them for sale.

Take cash, arrive at opening, prepare to haggle, don't take bags becauae you'll receive bags at the door once you've paid the £2 admission.

backonthewagon · 22/04/2018 19:37

what do people think of mythical creatures on baby clothes such as dragons, unicorns, phoenixes?

BertieBotts · 22/04/2018 22:23

Um, fine? Am I supposed to have an opinion on them? Are they controversial? Unicorns seem to be especially in these days, I must say I've never seen a phoenix or a gnome, lots of dragons and fairies.

BertieBotts · 22/04/2018 22:24

OK maybe not lots - but occasionally dragons or fairies. Ghosts at hallowe'en! I don't see many other mythical creatures on clothing, is what I meant to say.

LoveYouTimMinchin · 22/04/2018 22:26

NCT sale, charity shop, local facebook group, Gumtree, Ebay.

There are tons and tons and tons of good quality baby clothes up for sale at all times.

Atticusss · 22/04/2018 22:30

Highstreet wise Next do the best quality babygrows by far, and a choice to suit all tastes. A bit pricier than others but they sell on eBay really sell. I'd honestly just stick with bodysuits and sleepsuits for the first few months at least. Jools Oliver's Little Bird range at Mothercare is fantastic for something a bit different. It's all retro and bright and lovely.

Nomad86 · 23/04/2018 06:45

I always find Primark are pretty average in their sizing. Supermarkets are all fine and there's a decent choice. H&m stuff tends to be long and skinny so if you get given any, put it with the next size down stuff to make sure you use it.

If you like bright colours and fun designs, blade and rose do cute tights/trousers and crochet hats for both sexes. They often have sales on.

I'd try the NCT nearly new sales where you can get more expensive brands very cheaply.

Fia256 · 23/04/2018 07:59

I absolutely love Zara for both boys and girls. For newborns, if you go onto the mini section and into the underwear part they've got some lovely little bits that I wouldn't class as underwear or pjs, on top of all the lovely outfits and dresses they also do. I've also so far bought from Next, Boots mini club, M&S and H&M.

I haven't got anything from places like George and Sainsbury's yet purely for the fact that with my other two dc, dh family pretty much bought every bit of clothes they'd got from those two places so I know we will get a lot from there from them anyway! I also don't find the quality very good personally but then others have said the opposite!

happymummy12345 · 23/04/2018 08:10

I love mothercare for baby clothes.

Killerqueen2244 · 23/04/2018 08:10

For sleepsuits I found John Lewis and M&S to be the best with Next as a close third and Sainsbury’s bodysuits were great as well.

When your baby’s wearing clothes I found Sainsbury’s leggings/trousers to be very tight on the calf despite being fine around the waist although Joules trousers are very long in the leg (wait for the sale!)

I think it entirely depends on baby's size. My first two were 7lbs 10oz and 7lbs 7oz, and even at a regular weight like that they were teeny. I had to get tiny baby clothes for the first couple of weeks, which meant I had to send someone out to buy them the day after they were born because we didn't have any. Although with my second I had a few leftover bits so it wasn't as bad.

I couldn't do H&M or nutmeg because they're absolutely massive and I make short babies.

I'm pregnant with an unplanned baby 3 right now, and I'd already given away all of our baby clothes so I had to start again. This time I'm getting everything secondhand because it's way cheaper and you can find some absolutely lovely bits for very cheap secondhand. Sometimes even free.
