24 weeks movements - what's normal?

Hello,

I'm a first time mum and anxious in the best of circumstances - but pregnancy seems to have exaggerated my worrying nature!

I'm 24+1 weeks. Some days I feel LOTS of movement, and others (like today) I can feel barely a flutter for hours upon hours on end. I find myself lying awake at night after getting up to pee, "waiting" to feel something and getting myself into a right state. And during the day at work I'm finding it kind of hard to stay calm and rational (I'm an infant teacher so there's not much chance to do the whole "lie on your left side, relax and drink cold water" trick.)

At this stage, would it be reasonable to think that as long as I'm feeling SOME major movements every day, I'm on the right track? When did others feel like there was more of a pattern/more reliable and obvious kicks?

I thought I'd feel so much better by this stage of pregnancy but I'm finding this transition from feeling nothing to BEGINNING to feel lots really tough. :-( Any advice, reassurance appreciated!

Thanks x

Aren’t movements the most worrying thing?!

At 24 weeks mine were very sporadic. I went to get checked and was told baby has a lot of room to move around at that stage so unlikely to be anything to worry about. However please call triage and see about going to get checked. At 24 weeks your baby is viable and if it is because of a problem, which is very unlikely but possible, they can do something about it if you get there in time. I know it’s a complete pain but not worth taking chances. You’re not wasting anyone’s time. Flowers

Thank you. I've felt lots since getting home from work and chilling out. I did call triage today and they said the same as you, that movements can be veryyyy sporadic at this stage and that in a few weeks I'll notice a lot more. I can't wait for that!

I was exactly the same.
I became obsessed that I hadn’t felt baby move loads everyday.
With the benefit of now being further along in pregnancy (34 weeks tomorrow) I really shouldn’t have worried so much.

Gradually, the movements have increased to daily. Admittedly sometimes I had to really concentrate. But now, I can sit back on the sofa pop my hands on my tummy and within 20 mins or so, baby moves.
I’m still a complete stress head over it, baby likes to be quiet on the morning and I still panic, every.bloody.day!
Especially when I’m unable at work to sit and focus on movements.
I try and have set times now to feel baby, before I get up, around 10/11am, lunchtime, 6/7pm and then 9/10pm.
I underestimated how small baby is at 24 weeks and the amount of room it still has to move about.
I know it’s hard, but try not to worry. There really isn’t a right or wrong with baby movements.
I only really noticed a pattern about 32 weeks. If you are ever worried though, do give delivery a ring. Even if it’s just to offer you some advice.

I am 23+5 and exactly the same. I have a few days where I feel big movements all the time which I love. Then she will switch positions and I can't feel anything for a few days except possible tiny flutters that I can't rely on.

Isn't pregnancy the most worrying time, I feel like I have something new to worry about every week.

Sorry just to clarify with right or wrong I mean from pregnancy to pregnancy. You just have to eventually try and establish your ‘normal’.

At almost 27 weeks, my baby's movements are still sporadic. Would it help to get one of those "count the kicks" bracelets?

Movements are a minefield!! Early pregnancy is stressful because you have no movements to reassure you, then when they start they aren't reliable! I remember with DD being on holiday at exactly 24 weeks and panicking I'd felt nothing all day compared to the previous evening, and going back to the apartment to eat/drink/lie on side. It seemed to take forever for her to give me anything noticeable and even then I felt anxious! It really did fluctuate day to day until about 28 weeks or so, and the second time around I knew what to expect so was able to chill a lot more. It's very hard though!!

Thanks so much, you've all been so nice 😊 After a very quiet day yesterday she's been wiggling about all day today! I'll just have to try and remember that at this stage some change is to be expected from day to day.
