When to tell work

I'm about 4 weeks 4 days and I'm wondering when I should tell work?
I told them last time and it ended in miscarriage and they were so supportive and it was a very early one aswell.

Is it too soon to tell them? I'm a chef

Is there anything negative that could happen if I do like reduce my hours or whatever?

Thankyou for your help xx

I wouldn’t tell anyone till after the 12 week scan, personally.

I'm 20 weeks and I've only told two bosses and that was reluctantly. I'm currently on the train wondering if I should wear my 'baby on board' badge into work as I'm starting to show. I'm 40 years old and I'm still bloody afraid of people at work knowing.

I may just wait until next week as I have my scan next Monday.

It depends on your job. Does it have health and safety risks like manual handling, radiation protection, chemicals etc. In those cases you need to inform them immediately but if not I think the latest you need to let them know is 24 weeks which is when your matb1 needs to be given to your employer.

I told Work at 8 weeks as I was asked to do something that I had been advised not to! Although I really wish I could’ve left it later- I told my manager in confidence 🙄 and everyone new within days. Not ideal

Honey456 · 16/04/2018 10:06

I told work straight away- about 5 weeks.

I think asap is best so they can support you through it especially if you get morning sickness.

TittyGolightly · 16/04/2018 14:31

I informally told my manager at 13 weeks and didn’t formally declare it until 25 weeks (latest I could legally do it). Many pregnancies don’t make it that far and I didn’t want all and sundry knowing about it if it didn’t work out.

Depends how you're feeling and how you continue to feel, really. I told work at 15 weeks, but then I didn't need any time off in the first trimester and just worked flexibly around my antenatal appointments - if you need time off then it does make sense to tell them, as pregnancy-related illness is recorded differently and shouldn't be counted in your normal absence record. I didn't want anyone to know unless they had to, and for me there was no reason work had to know.

DoAsDreamersDo · 16/04/2018 14:54

I told my manager at about 6 weeks. This was mainly because I wanted her to know in case I needed any time off for illness etc. or if I suddenly faint at work (not that I plan on doing that!). I'll tell the rest of them once I've had my scan at 12 weeks.

There are a lot of protections for pregnant women in employment under the Equality Act 2010. But they only kick in once you have told your employer.

For example - sickness leave due to a known pregnancy is not counted as 'ordinary sickness leave' and cannot contribute to disciplinary / absense management action.

You do not need to tell anyone other than your manager and HR.

It makes sense, especially because they were so supportive before, to officially inform them. That doesn't mean you have to go public with anyone else.

Aw12345 · 16/04/2018 15:11

Tell them asap! You don't get pregnancy rights if they don't know you're pregnant!!

Thankyou for everyone's help I decided to tell them for the support :)
