Back pain

I'm 16 weeks today. Yesterday I went on an hour walk at my local park. I've been going on this walk for the last few years but this time by the end of the walk my lower back and bum was in alot of pain.

Today I went into town to do some clothes shopping. 2 hrs walking around the shops and my lower back and bum are in agony.

I know back pain is common in pregnancy but I thought it was more likely in the 3rd trimester. I'm only 16 weeks and barely have a bump.

Anyone else have this so early? How do I deal with it? I don't want to stop walking and gentle exercise so early in my pregnancy but I don't want to really stress myself hurt myself either.

Hmm, not sure when back pain starts tbh, I'm 24 weeks and haven't had any yet but everything is different for each pregnancy. I know the hormones can give you back pain because of the muscle relaxing hormone...

Hope you're more comfortable soon :-)

I'm only 15 weeks and have already had a couple of episodes of lower back pain. I found a really helpful exercise online somewhere (might have been on baby centre) - get down on all fours and raise your right leg behind you and lift your left arm forward while breathing out. Hold for a few seconds then put them back down. Repeat up to 10 times on each side. Doing this once a day sorted my back out in a couple of days. Hopefully it will work for you too!

I'm also starting pregnancy yoga tomorrow which is supposed to help - maybe see if you can find a pregnancy yoga or pilates class near you (it has to be specifically pregnancy/antenatal so you don't overstretch your ligaments).

Yep, 17 weeks here and occasionally shrieking with pain! I had it later on in first pregnancy and it got so bad that I couldn't really walk...I was prescribed cocodamol and that helped. Am going to try and style it out as long as possible this time but will hit the gp again if it gets worse as I have quite a physical job and I need to be able to move. I found a back/bump support belt helped too last time. Literally a massive pain in the arse Smile

Both of mine have carried low and against my spine to the point I didn't look pregnant up to and including the day of birth. The pain that caused and subsequent problems is/was unreal.

I would get checked by the midwife but in my experience it was simply due to where baby was positioned. Painkillers, back supports, heat wraps all helped.

My lower back pain was worse at the beginning and middle of pregnancy. Tailbone pain I had before my BFP! My middle/higher back pain (guessing caused by actual weight now) has just kicked in at 34 weeks. The type that causes me to walk around with my back arched and hand on my side like a proper melon

Thanks for all replies, I will definitely be trying some of your suggestions. I guess it's just one of the side effects of being pregnant, just thought I'd be further along before problems like this steered.

Back pain can start quite early in pregnancy it's the hormones that are released to make your muscles relax more to accommodate a baby that cause it rather than the size or weight of the baby. It doesn't mean things will get any worse as the pregnancy progresses but after long walks or lots of time standing it's quite usual to feel uncomfortable.

Pelvic pain started at 13 weeks with my first and a bit later this time round. You can ask for a physio appointment for some exercises to do to help shore things up a bit at your next midwife appointment. I find nothing aggregates it like walking.

Could be any number of things. Best get to the doctor and they could refer you for physio if needed
