Horrendous headaches

Just wondering if anyone has been suffering from awful headaches in the second trimester? I'm 16 weeks and for the past couple of weeks or so I've had horrific headaches. I never get headaches so this is definitely a big change for me. They're horrible - sometimes so bad that I literally can't do anything. Possibly what are called migraines though I've never had one of those either so don't know! I went the first couple of weeks not taking paracetomel as was determined not to take medication in pregnancy but I caved today after waking up with ANOTHER one (third or fourth day this week). The two paracetomel I took didn't get rid of the headache but did dull the pain a bit to make it kind of bearable - then it got worse so I took two more.

I've booked a docs appointment for Tuesday as am sick of it. But anyone else experiencing this and know what it's all about? I can't go on like this for the next 24 weeks... It's worse than the nausea and I never thought I'd say that about anything!!
Thanks.

PS I am drinking and eating and sleeping enough so that's not the issue

I had this and it was around that time. It did pass but came back with avengence at the time of labour approaching. They will want to check your bp so may be best to phone midwife. Hope it passes quickly for you.

I had this and it was posture related, manual therapy helped hugely.
Might be worth exploring once you have bp etc checked to rule out any other cause.
Ps I found ice and heat helpful at base of skull and across shoulders. Hope it eases soon

Thanks! I've always had low blood pressure. My husband has his own Blood Pressure monitor (have no idea why actually) and I tried it the other day and it's still very low as always (on the bottom end of normal). So I don't think it's that! Will try the ice advice - thanks! Good to hear I'm not the only one who's gone through this!

I’ve been having these headaches too! I’m 15 weeks tomorrow and they’ve been over the last week or so. No advice but I feel for you op 😢 xx

I suffered with really bad headaches first get checked by your midwife just to rule out high blood pressure. Also increase your water intake. I suffered from around 20weeks they eased up around 30 weeks, they couldn't find a reason for mine, but I found 4head worked for me.

Op, I feel feel for you. I had awful headaches throughout both pregnancies.

They stopped at about 20 weeks. I had to reduce the amount of cheese, chocolate ect

maggiehilltop · 14/04/2018 21:39

I'm 31 weeks and had this for a couple of months. It was horrendous, you have my full sympathy. I found there really wasn't much I could do to help and no one was suggesting anything other than paracetamol, which didn't make much difference. Psychologically, I managed because they only lasted a day at a time, so I knew by the next morning they'd be gone.

I've been headache free for perhaps 6 weeks now. No real reason for them going, everyone I speak to just suggests they were hormone related.

Fingers crossed yours go soon too.

As PPs have said, I totally feel your pain but providing your BP is ok there is very little that can be done- 28 weeks and headaches still going strong. GP suggested to try codeine (I’d managed to break a couple of ribs so he was hoping it would help both) but the codeine made the headaches worse! Needless to say I’m just hoping they die off on their own!

sayhellotothelittlefella · 14/04/2018 22:14

Yes I did every pregnancy - Second trimester. Headaches so bad they made me vomit, a bit like migraine. I was told it was hormones apparently. Only so much paracetamol you can take. I used the headache gel stuff that you put on your forehead it helped a little bit but not always. I thought it might have been chocolate related for a while but no real evidence for that. I have no other advice really, just sympathy.

Bluebirdsky · 14/04/2018 22:59

I had awful migraines at that time until I was about 18-19 weeks and then they subsided. I am 29 weeks now and haven't had one for ages.

brackeroo · 15/04/2018 08:31

I'm 16+4 and have been getting headaches since the beginning of 2nd trimester. I have always suffered migraines but these are different. I saw the midwife on Friday and she said it was totally normal and not to worry. I'm sorry you're suffering. Hopefully they'll ease up in a few weeks.

Thanks all for the lovely helpful and reassuring replies. I woke up today without one (horay!) So at least I can have a decent Sunday! Seeing GP Tuesday to put my mind at ease but sounds like wikl just have to battle through it. Thanke again :)

I find 4head quite helpful and a cold flannel or ice pack on the back of my neck.
I also find a small amount of caffeine sometimes helps so sometimes I will take dissolvable paracetamol in a little bit of full fat coke or have a normal cup of tea.
