My partners parents live 80 miles away from us and his mum is quite ill, she will be unable to make the trip to visit us once the baby is born. This is my first child (and her first grandchild) so i don't know if i am i being completely mental but is it a bad idea once i am discharged from the hospital after labour to drive up and see them with the baby. My partner thinks its a stupid idea and to see them in a couple of days later, i think if we get it out the way once i am home i am home and can relax without feeling pressure to go up and see them. I have said we wont make concrete plans but is this a completely idiotic idea?

Thanks

Glad you have decided against this, you really won't feel up to it after giving birth. I had a quick, easy birth with a minor first degree tear but that car journey home was one of the most uncomfortable of my life (speed bumps, so many fucking speed bumps 😩). I had to sit on a towel for days so I wouldn't bleed straight through onto my lovely sofa. Your fanjo will thank you for getting home asap.

I'm so glad you've realised it was a bad decision Grin I was going to add that with DD I wasn't discharged for 6 days after EMCS and was barely walking when I left. With DS I tore so badly I couldn't have sat on a pile of feathers if you'd paid me!!

It's a very sweet plan, but yes awful as you now know. I was in hospital for 5 days (not for anything major, just blood pressure) before I was discharged and every little bump on the road was very painful!

My MiL lives a similar distance and we didn’t go visit until dd was two weeks old. Felt physically ok but was just exhausted and getting bf sorted before then. Sadly she may have to wait a bit.

I know you are saying its 'only an hour and a bit away' and I am definitely not going to tell you what giving birth is like because every birth is so different, but have you any experience with babies at all? Have you done any reading or gone to classes or watched any programs or visited someone with a new born even?

I'm just wondering if you should try to prepare yourself for how tired you MAY be afterwards. Please don't think I am saying that in a mean way, because I had absolutely no experience with babies before having my first baby, I had never even held a baby or even really seen one beforehand, and I figured it out fine, I'm just saying it because you might be expecting too much of yourself.
I know everyone is different but I think you should plan to be very tired for a while and if you are not, then great but don't make any plans until the time comes and you will know yourself what you are able for. Best wishes to you.
