Hey everyone im new to this site i just want to see if anyone has gone through what im going through at the moment! So i went for my 12 week scan on 11th april and even i noticed the baby had a lump on the belly so i asked what it was....anyway i was referred to fetal medicine as the ultrasound tech thought it could be possible gastrochisis where the bowel is growing outside the baby from a hole where the abdominal wall didnt form properly...so i went for appt today with consultant in fetal medicine and he could see the bowel and also the liver outside the wall :( but he cant confirm for deff if is gastrochisis i need to go back in 2 weeks for confirmation as baby is still very small.... its so annoying as my last pregnancy was eptopic and now this...i do have a healthy little girl she is 4 and so thankful for her..i just want a sibling for her but it just seems like its not happening easily !

Has anyone been through this with the bowel and liver or anything else....

Thanks in advance
Laura

Hi, I am a NICU nurse and while gastroschisis seems like a very very serious problem, the majority are relatively straightforward to correct. I work in a level 3 unit where gastroschisis repair is fairly common. If it is confirmed they may want you to have further tests to rule out other problems as they can be linked to some other defects.
Happy if you have a questions to pm me. Good luck 🙂

Hi han01uk

Thanks for replying! Have you seen any cases where the liver is also outside aswell?

Its just the waiting for conformation of what it is for deff!!

Hi there.

My daughter was born at 37 weeks with gastroschisis and was operated on at 2 hours old, was only bowel and not liver. She is nearly 6 now and other than 2 incidents of a hernia type lump showing for a couple of hours and then correcting itself, we haven't really had any issues with it.

She was taken to a&e on both occasions and the lump had disappeared by the time she was seen by a doctor. We have been told this could, and probably will, happen again but it's likely that it will always correct itself (hopefully!).

To be honest, the worst part was having her via emergency section and not seeing her until she was 8 hours old, and then she was in nicu with lots of wires etc. We were told during pregnancy to expect her to be in hospital for 12 weeks and she was home after only 3 thanks to an excellent surgeon.

Hopefully things will be fine for you and your baby, I don't think this condition is too rare either although I had never heard of it until that 12 week scan.

My husband is 28 this month and born with gastroschisis in the 90s when it was much more of a big deal. I think they gave him a 5% survival rate at some point... anyway he's now a super fit and healthy grown man with a baby all his own. He still had a slight gap in his abdominal muscles which gives a slight hernia when doing sit ups, his belly button is also man made and he has his scar but otherwise you can't tell 😁

Just thought I'd share as it might give you some hope. Now a days it's much more known about and medicine is much more advanced so your baby will likely be fine. My husband was delivered vaginally so you may not even need a c section. But they might wrap their belly in a film before operating a few days after birth. Also since you're only 12 weeks there is still time for your baby's belly to close up more or even completely.

Good luck!

Thankyou it would be a miracle if it did close up but dont think im going to be that lucky :(
