Want to work until due date but worried waters will go at work...

Not sure if this is a silly thing to worry about...

My mum was a SAHM and when her waters went with all 4 of her kids she had a movie-style flood of fluid! I really want to work until my due date however am concerned my waters will go somewhere embarrassing and I will end up with my whole office witnessing me with a huge wet patch between my legs!

Never had a baby before, so would love to hear from some mums who worked until their due dates. What were your experiences?

Also, what was your experience of your waters going? Big gush or a steady leak?

Nobody tells you these things as a mum expecting their first....

Out of my many many dc my waters only went dramatically once when I was asleep and thought I had wet the bed!! Blush
Once trickled in Sainsbury's but managed to finish the shopping!!

RaindropsOnRoses2 · 13/04/2018 20:55

Mine went at the hospital once I was fully dilated but my god there was a lot of water - so much more than i ever thought! Now I see why they say to protect your mattress/car/sofa because they would be completely ruined! Grin

However SIL just had a baby and hers trickled... she went to the toilet and realised she'd stopped weeing but liquid was still trickling out.

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/04/2018 20:56

Mine went when I was about to push her out! I was also 2 weeks late and I worked up to my due date too.

Horsedogbird · 13/04/2018 20:56

I always say babies don't know when their due date is. Some come early, some on time, some late, mine came early. My waters broke whilst I was pushing baby out.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 13/04/2018 20:56

No experience of it as I was induced, but I think it's much more usual to start having contractions first. I'm not working till due date, just up to 38+5 but I'm not really too worried. It could happen at work, and it'll be a funny story. Or it could happen on the bus, when I'm doing the nursery run, at the gym, or at Tescos etc. The way I see it, I can't just stay inside all the time in case my waters go!

Laurilee · 13/04/2018 20:58

@Girlwiththearabstrap I had no idea it was more common to start contractions first. That's really interesting, thanks!

I feel like I'm on this journey of becoming a mother yet have no idea what I'm doing or what to expect!

Thanks everyone for your experiences so far. This is really eye opening for someone who hasn't done this all before!

I suddenly felt the urge to vomit and while that was going on, my waters broke in what felt like a huge gush. Glamorous. I would not have wanted that to happen at work.

However, I had been contracting all night at that point so it wasn't a huge surprise.

NapQueen · 13/04/2018 21:00

Mw popped mine in labour both times. In dc2s case it was about 45 seconds before he was delivered.

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/04/2018 21:01

@60sname oh god the vomiting. I'd forgotten that bit. I've never thrown up so much in my life!! I was cursing the midwives for making me drink and eat haha

ChristmasAccountant · 13/04/2018 21:02

With dc1 mine gushed as I stood up, thankfully I was home at the time. I wouldn't have wanted it to happen at work, there was a lot of water!

Laurilee · 13/04/2018 21:03

@60sname @FrozenMargarita17 vomiting?! Oh man. Maybe I should've just waited for a surprise... this thread is opening my eyes massively!

Mine went in a big flood at 38 weeks. My contractions did start before, but I literally had 3 mild contractions within 10 minutes and then they went.

BubblesAndSquarks · 13/04/2018 21:03

If waters do go its often trickling rather than a big gush, but usually contractions will start first.
With my first and third they were broken near the end of labour to speed it up when the babies heart rates weren't perfect, and with my second they broke with the first push at the end of labour.

JackietheBackie · 13/04/2018 21:04

Have you done any antenatal or birth preparation classes OP? The most common scenario is for waters to break later on in your labour. There is about a litre of fluid. Like other people have said, it is sometimes a gush, sometimes a trickle.

Laurilee · 13/04/2018 21:06

@JackietheBackie I'm only just coming out of my first trimester so not quite yet! Though by the sounds of things I can't afford to miss them!

butterybean · 13/04/2018 21:08

I worked right up until 42 weeks then went in for an induction. They had to break my waters for me. I'd say if you feel ok (I felt a lot better in my 3rd trimester than in the 1st or 2nd) then keep working. If you feel like it's all starting to happen move to a room with a moppable floor just incase Grin.

Chatcat1 · 13/04/2018 21:10

It's not like the films. The first sign of labour can be one of many things .... waters going, first contraction, the show, vomiting, diarrhoea. Most women's waters do not go until later.....

But fun fact, if they do go.... it doesn't stop. I'm the waters replenish themselves. My waters went first, with no contractions..... I was leaking for 2 days which was awkward! And I had more then one gush!

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/04/2018 21:11

Ahaha sorry @Laurilee yes vomiting I'm afraid. I had the best labour though! Honestly I'd rather do the labour again than the nights sometimes :))

Laurilee · 13/04/2018 21:12

I do have one more question... I work about an hour away from where I live. When contractions first start, are they so bad that you can't travel back on the train? Or is it fine to think I can travel back, meet DP at home and take it from there?

Am I getting this all completely wrong?

@FrozenMargarita17 fingers and toes crossed my labour will be good too! Am enjoying this thread it's really interesting. Though it makes me feel like a bit of a numpty...

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/04/2018 21:13

When my contractions started I went food shopping around Sainsbury's but everyone is different. My labour was long and walking helped keep me calm and helped it progress.

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/04/2018 21:14

Not at all OP! There are so many things people don't tell you.

I loved my labour, I really did. I had a home birth with no intervention and I've never felt so powerful in my entire life.

Laurilee · 13/04/2018 21:16

@FrozenMargarita17 it sounds fantastic. My mum had home births with all of us (4 babies). She describes it similarly.

People tell me I'm mad for looking forward to childbirth... probably won't be saying that in 28 weeks!

toasterstrudle · 13/04/2018 21:16

Listen to your body! I was fully expecting to go 2 weeks overdue as my mum did with all of us, but the day after my due date I had quite a bit of diarrhoea (sorry if tmi!) and on and off low level period type cramps. In hindsight, this was clearly low contractions! My waters went in a dramatic burst that night, but I wasn't surprised really.

smartiecake · 13/04/2018 21:17

I had a long labour with DS1 - over 30 hours. Spent the first 20 hours at home having contractions. At first its like bad period pain and an ache - the screaming stage came much later for me! And my waters went when i was pushing not long before he was born.
