Had to have a growth scan at 36 weeks and have been told my baby weights 7 pounds 3 and her belly is on the 97th percentile and very big for how far I am and I am to be induced at 39 weeks but that's all :/ have no idea how induction works and am extremely worried about the baby does her having a big belly mean anything wrong with her health wise they barely told me anything :( has anyone else has this? Her head was also on the small side so confused .. xx

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks and my baby weighed 6lbs 3oz. He was born at 40+6 and weighed 6lbs 4oz, so I don't know how accurate the weights can be.

If they or your midwife don't seem overly concerned, I'd try and relax.

Not sure about the percentiles but my baby now (5 months old) has height and weight on the 2nd/9th percentile and his head is on the 75th.

If you're worried, call your midwife for some reassurance, especially as they didn't explain things very well to you.

Scans are much less accurate later in pregnancy.

Dd2 was 7lbs at a 36 week scan - but born at 38+3 - 7lb 10

SIL was told to prepare for a tiny 5lb full term baby (we even looked at preemie clothes) - baby born at 39+6 at 7 lbs 11

I had a baby that weighed more than 10lbs. Although I did have a large bump, it was a complete surprise to everyone including the (community) midwife delivering. I probably wouldn’t have been allowed the home birth had they have known.

Moral of the story: it’s not accurate and very very often wrong.

Besides, whatever size they are it bloody smarts a bit and by the time you do find out the weight, the hard work is already done!

Good luck.

I was told I was having big babies. They were 7lbs and 6lbs respectively.

It's highly inaccurate.

Scans are very inaccurate - they are better at judging if the baby is growing or not than the exact weight

They can offer you induction at 39 weeks but you can decline

They are so inaccurate. I had growth scans with DC2 and was told he had a 'chubby tummy' (actual quote) and that he would be over 10lbs and I'd need to be induced, or consider a section. He was 7lb 9 and a perfect ratio of tummy to body. Try not to worry, the consultant I saw after the scan told me that if another sonographer scanned you tomorrow, they'd find a different thing.

I would ask for much more detail about why your being induced at 39 weeks. You don't have to if you don't want to without very good medical evidence for it.

HoarseMackerel · 13/04/2018 20:32

I was induced due to an estimated weight of 10lb or more.
My DS was 7lb 11oz so definitely not accurate.
When I was induced, it took ages and I don't think he really wanted to come out!

The scans are so inaccurate. DD was delivered (ELCS) at 37+1 after multiple scans showed a serious problem with her growth rate. The doctor told us that she would be less than 4lb. She was 6lb.

Big baby's run in both my mum's and my genes I had my son he weighed 9 pound 3 but his body was all the right size abdomen was normal x
