Thrush in pregnancy

Anybody else suffering, and what can I take?! If i’ve ever had thrush before i just take the canesten once tablet (or supermarket equivalent) but i’ve just had a little look online and it says don’t use if pregnant. So do I just buy the cream instead? In the past i’ve find the cream alone to not be enough :-/

Thanks! the glamour of pregnancy...

I had this terribly throughout 1st pregnancy. Check with a pharmacist but in the end i found a salt bath every night the only thing to relive the itching. I don't recall taking anything for it but maybe used the topical creams, can’t remember now.

My understand is that canestan thrush products say check with midwife or doctor before using if you're pregnant, not that you can't use them. Cream is for itching but doesn't treat it.

My midwife said it was fine to use the Canesten solid pessary (or own brand e.g. Lloyds). I'd never found it useful before but it actually worked for the first time so maybe pregnancy thrush is a bit different ;-)

You definitely can't use the oral tablet though, big no-no.

I suffered terrible through my pregnancy with this. I checked with my midwife and she said the solid peasary was fine as was the topical cream. Think it's just the oral tablet that was a no-no. As long as the active ingredients are the same, own brand is just as good as canesten I found

I found out I had it at my 40 week midwife appointment - had no symptoms except the discharge, and as I'd never had it before I thought it was just a normal pregnancy thing! Anyway, the midwife gave me the Canesten 500mg pessary and also the Clotrimozole 1% cream. Seems to have worked a treat.

I've got it too (joy of pregnancy lol) and I used the canesten pessary. The NHS website says it's safe in pregnancy but you just can't use the applicator to put it in. Still waiting to see if it's worked, only used it last night! I know the oral tablet isn't safe in pregnancy

harrietm87 · 13/04/2018 11:57

@kate288 my midwife told me to use the applicator! Hope she was right..,

TinyTerror1 · 13/04/2018 13:33

I was told not to use the applicator either, but I don't really know why. If you're at 40 weeks already it probably can't do anything particularly terrible though ;-)

thank you, i’ll opt for the pessary then if the cream doesn’t clear it up. i know it probably sounds silly but i don’t like the idea of the pessary! sounds messy. but better than thrush!
