Overweight and pregnant

Hi all

Looking for some advice, I’ve found out I’m pregnant with baby number 2 but am absolutely worried as this time around I’m classed as obese. I’ve been loosing weight through slimming world and taking orlistat as prescribed by the doctor. I have been researching about being overweight and pregnant and it’s terrifying me especially the statistics. I eat reasonably healthy and will continue this.
I’m probably more anxious due to the hormones but can anyone give me advice on things I can do and/or any positive stories.

Thanks

Hi lass

When I had my first in 2014 I was 26 stone and 5'11. Perfectly healthy pregnancy and only induced due to 3x reduced movements later on and forceps due to tilted uterus. I had NO issues after birth and episiotimy healed great.

I've gone via weight management in Glasgow and have lost 50kg since April last year when I had a gastric sleeve - I'm now pregnant with #2.

Now, I also have PCOS and pernicious anemia which was discovered in 2014 and resulted in blood transfusion etc as haemoglobin dropped to 50 before I discovered I was 6 weeks pregnant.

Depending where you are will depend on your areas policy for consultant led care etc - I'm consultant led both times and love my doctor and nurses to bits as they know us pretty well.

GD wise you will get the test at some point but it doesn't meant you will get it - weight isn't a major factor in it as GD strikes all weights heavy and light.

You probably will be put on aspirin after 12 weeks and have a few more scans but hey - that's good!

Orlistat (I hated it) you need to check if that's safe in pregnancy (our area it's only available via the weight management service). Might be worth coming off it during pregnancy but following SW programme that's safe in pregnancy and a goodguide.

(Also saves those icky moments if you crave something yummy - wonderful side effect!) 🤣🤣

Apart from that- feel free to ask anything and I'm 22 weeks along with no issues.

Oh sorry was meant to say

Walking, swimming, gardening etc

Your doing everything right!

We have a 3yr old daughter so I'm busy with her craziness but I also found between weeks 16-19 I was wheezy as hell due to the push on my lungs - remember that symptom.

:)

Thanks for the advice, I’ve stopped the orlistat and am just sticking to slimming world which as you can imagine is extremely difficult when all I’m craving is naughty foods. I am trying to limit this and do things to distract from the cravings. Congratulations on your pregnancy x

I was obese when I became pregnant with my second (approx bmi 35) no problems during pregnancy of labour related to my weight and it was a fast labour and birth, with no intervention.
I guess with a longer labour being fitter would help, but you can carry on with your normal exercise and eating healthly, which will help.

Hiya - oh god yeah I totally get the struggle!

Thing I learned with pregnancy is not to stop certain food and treats but to eat smaller amounts of them and maybe do some more walking to burn it off. I follow that same advice with the sleeve since 80% of stomach is gone I have to go with protien first and veggies second.

Is if SW who do a pregnancy plan you can follow?

Good luck mama!

Lilachopesandwishes · 12/04/2018 22:23

Isthistoonoisy- thanks chick, that’s very reassuring. I’m trying to be more active than usual. Thanks for the advice xx

Gryffen- I’m trying to have smaller amounts and not deprive myself but am trying to choose a sweet fruit rather than a sugary food when I get those cravings. I’m not sure if sw do a pregnancy plan but it would be ideal to look in to that, I am following it but not as religiously as before eg allowing my self more syns. It’s difficult at the moment and my anxiety isnt helping. I didn’t feel like this last time and have scared myself more by researching because now the statistics have made me even more anxious. I don’t have anyone I can talk to about this as I feel they will judge me for putting myself in this situation. Sad x

I’m so glad I looked at this thread. My BMI was 30 when I fell pregnant and I am 26 weeks now. My food choices have been terrible and I can tell I’ve put on a lot of weight - I’m too scared to weigh myself. I’ve had my bump measured this week and it’s tracking on 90th centile so I’m really worried my poor food choices have caused this baby to be big.

This thread has motivated me to get a grip of my food choices. I’ve done slimming world before, but can’t afford to rejoin. Is it just 2 of each healthy extras as the difference for pregnancy?

Lilachopesandwishes · 12/04/2018 22:42

Hiya akp79

From what I’ve been looking up online it does seem that you can have 2xHEA and 2xHEB. I haven’t been having these but it is nice to know I can have them if I want. I’ve been allowing myself 5-10 more syns a day depending on what I’m feeling that day. I also don’t go to group as I can’t afford it, I follow it from home with support of some Facebook recipe groups.I’d say that following slimming world is working for me (filling meals). So far I’ve been having
Breakfast- cereal and fruit
Snacks- banana and apple
Dinner- pasta salad, yogurt and fruit
Tea- meat and jacket potato with rice/salad
And anything else I fancy that day eg crisps, chocolate, biscuits.

I'm 33, this is my third and my BMI is currently 39. I was 9st with my first and 11st with my second and I'm terrified this time around as I'm a lot bigger. I've been actively trying to lose weight and I've lost 8lbs in my the last two weeks but know that's not sustainable if I want a healthy baby.

MagnaWiles · 12/04/2018 23:01

Rather than cutting down on fat, cut down on sugar -- gestational diabetes is a risk when you are obese. With that said, you can make a big difference by cutting down on carbs and sugar, so this is worth doing!

I have had two good births, one in hospital with help from ventouse and the second at home with no pain relief at all! Both healthy and happy.

Don't let the statistics scare you. It's perfectly possible to have a healthy pregnancy and birth, and you can do all the right things by eating healthily during pregnancy and drinking lots of water. I didn't mean to, but I ended up losing weight and am now a stone lighter than when I got pregnant 15 months ago!

@Lilachopesandwishes

Slimming world is approved for pregnancy bacuse of the extra hexa and hexb parricularly the calcium and good fats so make sure you're eating them.

Im 11 weeks pregnant and my BMI is over 40. I've got my booking and scan next Tuesday and am so worried about it. Ive got an 8 month old but my BMI was under 40 when I got pregnant with her. All I've done since she arrived is eat crap Blush
