Does SPD get worse and/or arrive earlier each pregnancy?

I'm on 3rd pregnancy and got SPD mildly at about 38 wks (it ended up being a 42wk pregnancy) first time and then 35 weeks with second (also went over to nearly 42 weeks). I spoke to MW about it at 35 wks the second time but there was a 6 week wait for physio so no point. I can feel twinges now at 26 weeks but nothign too bad. Is it worth asking for a referral now just in case? Does it really help?

Definitely get the referral now, it does tend to get worse with subsequent pregnancies.

I was wondering this the other day. With my first pregnancy I was on crutches by 23 weeks. I’m 27 weeks today and have felt nothing so far. Zero, nada not a twinge. Really odd but every single day I’m painless is a blessing I’m grateful for.
Ask for a referral ASAP in case you need it later on. Wishing you all the best!

Yes - push for referral. I had SPD in both pregnancies and it was significantly worse and much earlier in the second pregnancy. Depending on where you are the referrals can take ages. Best to get on top of it earlier.

SPD is a physical misalignment of your pelvis. It will have twisted or partially separated. There is only one way to treat it which is to put the pelvis back in it's correct position. If you have spd in pregnancy 1 without it being treated then your pelvis will remain out of shape/misaligned until it's put back correctly. The hormone relaxin exacerbates the condition which is why you would most definitely feel it early in subsequent pregnancies.

Most NHS physios are not trained in realigning and therefore offer exercises which support the surrounding muscles. You can ask for physio with pgp experience but I've found them to be like hens teeth. The pgp partnership website has loads of info on it which is where I've done most of my research.

I had awful spd in pregnancy 1 and ended up on crutches. by 6 weeks pregnant with dc2 I was back on crutches and headed to be in a wheelchair as the pain was that bad. I did loads of research and read that chiropractors can realign. I have not been in pain since and was able to walk out of the chiropractor without crutches.

I wish someone had told me all of this with dc1! I wouldn't have put up with the suffering if I'd known.

Good luck I really hope you can get it sorted.

I’m on my 4th pregnancy and I can already feel the twinges at 10! Weeks Sad

Chiropractor and pilates kept it at bay in my third pregnancy. It was constantly around the corner if I stopped but in my second pregnancy I was on crutches.

I had it with my first pg but not my second. It doesn't always recur.

Suffering with SPD myself from about 25 weeks- crutches, signed off work etc. The only thing that's helped is acupuncture- I have it once a week with a private physio and it makes a HUGE difference. Was sceptical at first but converted now!

Had it with first around 34 weeks but didn't need crutches or anything, have it slightly now at 22 weeks but only at night and referal in as I know it's gonna worsen.

Doesn't always come back, friend was in crutches by 21 weeks in first but fine in all other 4 pregnancies.
