WAAAAAH - today I was backed into a corner with regards to getting my bloods done........

managed to miss both my 28 and 34 week bloods - 28 week was sort of deliberate - 34 ones not quite so.........last 2 midwife appointments she wrote in my notes "urged to get bloods done"........and I agreed I would at least get them done before DC3 arrives (I'm 36+3).

Anyhow, today had a consultants appointment at the hospital......of course he saw the comment in my notes.....and asked if I'd had any done since I last saw her.......cue me ing and admitting I hadn't.....after some light hearted banter he and the MW that was with him (who was WONDERFUL and I really hope she's on duty when I go into labour) suggested I had them done there and then to save me any bother of getting my Dr.s surgery......I agreed.

MW told me to wait outside......and took my notes with her - so I couldn't escape . She was the one that took them - although could't get anything out of my right arm.....what looked like 'fairly decent' veins just collapsed when she tried to get any......she tried again in my other arm and was successful.

I HATE needles, and particularly hate having my blood taken (although I was going to get them done before DC3 arrived........honest). I commented to the MW that she'd taken my notes with her.........and she grinned and said she'd done it because she suspected I'd have a change of heart and do a runner .

Anyhow - besides now feeling battered and bruised on both arms she was fantastic - brought all my notes (including DS2's birth ones) with her to do my bloods and (I think in an effort to take my mind off the imminent needle) talked through quite a lot of my labour and birth with DS2 - with was AMAZING.......I've been being to get a copy of my notes since I had him (3 1/2yrs ago) but never got round to it - so was really good to discuss bits and pieces of it with her.

When I called DH to ask him to pick me up - I told him how I'd been backed into a corner and he just laughed and said "that's godd"

Bet my MW will have a good laugh about it when she's hears how they managed to get a needle in my arm today.

I feel for you Fanny. I am the same with needles but a lot better since having DD; mind you having gestational diabetes and having to stab myself to test bloods four times a day kind of forced the issue!

Well done on being brave!

Imawurzel · 11/05/2007 18:39

Do they do lots of needle stuff???
I'm pg with my 1st, 7 weeks.
Hate hate hate needles. Are they big???

LilRedWG · 11/05/2007 18:40

Ima - not huge, don't worry. Just a few tests. Just make sure you tell the nurses and midwives that you may faint, it usually gets you somewhere to lie down and a cup of tea!

fannyannie · 11/05/2007 18:41

LilRed - this is my 3rd - mind you wasn't in the UK for booking in bloods with DS1, and managed to miss one of the other with that - but has a CS.....so lots of needles then, again lots of needles with DS2.......still no better.

Still at least that's all until I have him........once I'm in the throws of labour I won't give a toss what they're jabbing into me LOL.

Oh - and "brave" my ar*e - I reckon my (lovely) MW called up and told them to pin me down if that's what it took to get blood out of me

SoupDragon · 11/05/2007 18:41

Oh how disappointing. I had visions of them pushing you into a corner with upturned chairs like lion tamers, then rushing at you, pinning you downand taking the blood.

LilRedWG · 11/05/2007 18:43

Still brave Fanny - it's horrible! the worst for me was the spinal before my CS - scared me stupid!!!!

PeachyChocolateEClair · 11/05/2007 18:43

They're not big, just normal blood tests

I ahted them too- pre-eclampsia put paid to that, got used quite quickly!

(LilRedmg we used to practice injections on diabetics for nursing- not entirely sure they were supposed to get us to do it but it was sasumed they were OK with needles )

fannyannie · 11/05/2007 18:43

LOL SD - I bet you did .......no she just took my Antenatal Notes and wouldn't give them back until I'd sat on the bed and let her take the blood

at soupdragons post.
using chairs. i have that image in my head now.

SparklyGothKat · 11/05/2007 18:45

I hate injections, and having bloods taken, which the nurses find really funny as I have piercings, but its when its left there and they are pushing on it, I don;t like it. Very brave FA, I would never have bloods taken if I didn't have too.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2007 19:44

I think I might have left my notes and legged it.

rabbleraiser · 11/05/2007 19:49

Big sympathy, Fannie. I too have a fear of needles ... or a fear of intravenous needles (I don't have a problem with the dentist, or an arm jab, etc). Some people have got very narrow veins, and it bloody hurts. I get in such a panic that the veins I do have disappear, which make the whole process worse.

I'm stoical in all other areas (had a 48-hr labour with no pain relief at all), but I begged not to have bloods.

Still, I bet you're relieved now

fannyannie · 11/05/2007 20:05

Yes I guess I am slightly relieved - although the bruising is coming up nicely now (lovely MW did aplogise before I left saying that I'd probably have bruises on both arms)......she said my veins weren't very good......when she tried to get it out my right arm the ones she had managed to find just collapsed........so she tried the other arm and did at least manage to get the blood she needed.......but even then it was a struggle LOL.

Well, if we ever find ourselves in a tussle over a thread (and I hope not), we'll remember to back off .... we've got bad veins (and I wear glasses too).
