Vegetarian craving meat!

Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if any other veggie or pesce ladies have been through this? I've been a vegetarian for two years now, but since week 11 of my pregnancy I've been craving meat like crazy - mainly steak - which is something I never enjoyed before becoming a veggie! I'm trying to stand up against the cravings but so worried I'll crave! I'm veggie because of moralistic choices and not wanting to cause suffering to animals - but it's always there! 😭 xxx

I'm not veggie but don't normally eat a lot of meat - when I was pregnant I definitely wanted more than normal!

SuburbanRhonda · 12/04/2018 08:34

I’m sure it’s Natalie Portman who is usually a vegan but stops when pregnant. Likewise Hilaria Baldwin is usually vegan but eats fish and dairy during pregnancy following doctors advice.

So neither of these women is an actual vegan then.

BillyBadBreaks · 12/04/2018 09:20

I'm vegan and thankfully haven't been craving meat and wouldn't give in if I did. Can't remember what it tastes like anymore though so I guess that helps!

newtlover · 12/04/2018 09:23

I had twins and decided that I needed more protien than I was getting (you are making two babies after all and they are mostly made of protien
I ate white fish a few times a week, and stopped after

Atticusss · 12/04/2018 09:26

Yes I did. After weeks of not being able to keep any food down and the thought of all food making me gag, I woke up one morning with a huge craving for a bacon buttie. I felt so weak from lack of food I had one, and I managed to keep it down. I did eat meat for the rest of the pregnancy.

Memom · 12/04/2018 09:29

That's bought back a memory, been veggie my whole life then when pregnant with number 1 I had a sudden craving for a greggs sausage roll. I didn't give in and it passed after a week or so but always makes me chuckle. Apparently, it means your body is lacking something (so the midwife said) but I'm not sure I was lacking sausage roll Smile

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/04/2018 09:45

So neither of these women is an actual vegan then.

They're vegans who were not vegan for a while and then were again. So they're vegans. Very few vegans have been that way ever since birth, so they've almost all eaten meat/dairy/eggs at some point.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/04/2018 09:49

lisa

Presumably they didn’t declare themselves vegan at birth.

However they have declared thenskeves vegan as adults. And if you eat meat, fish or dairy you are no longer vegan. It’s not an opt-in, opt-out thing.

Why they have to declare anything about their dietary preferences, rather than just eating what they like, is a mystery to me.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 12/04/2018 10:04

I become obsessed with meat every time I am pregnant, and I do temporarily suspend vegetarianism and give in occasionally. I reinstate it when the baby's out.

In pregnancy #2 I thought about Chicken McNuggets obsessively for weeks, despite the fact I hadn't stepped foot in a McDonalds for well over a decade. I was too ashamed to go in and order some and never did so, but boy did I think about it a lot.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/04/2018 10:15

Have you ever tried being vegetarian or vegan, suburban? See how far you get if you don't use labels without seriously pissing people off by not eating their food.

It's really judgy of you to say that a woman who temporarily ate meat during pregnancy can't call herself vegetarian/vegan again (what, ever?).

LaContessaDiPlump · 12/04/2018 10:21

Have you tried those Limda McCartney quarter pounder burgers?

I agree with this - they are suspiciously meaty! May soothe a craving anyway.

Loyaultemelie · 12/04/2018 10:28

They are suspiciously meaty
This is almost an exact quote from my kitchen the other night, even part raptor DH will eat them!

SuburbanRhonda · 12/04/2018 10:33

Have you ever tried being vegetarian or vegan, suburban?

Yes - vegetarian for 35 years, with two adult DC, who have been vegetarian since birth.

It’s not about being judgy Hmm. It’s about not being able to understand why anyone would want to label themselves as vegan when they’re not. Why label yourself at all? I only ever do when people ask, as you did.

PinkAvocado · 12/04/2018 10:40

There are so many meat substitutes now that I never crave meat and didn’t in pregnancy. The thought of putting dead flesh into my body was more repulsive but I struggle in early pregnancy especially to find any food appealing!

LaContessaDiPlump · 12/04/2018 10:42

I made a very passable vegan cottage pie with the aid of soya mince and a bit of onion gravy/soy sauce the other night too, if you want some more meaty options op!

pickingdaisies · 12/04/2018 10:58

Yes, I ate several totally delicious burgers when pregnant and ate less dairy. Never really reverted to proper vegetarian because I felt better with that diet. (Some meat, hardly any dairy, not a burger diet!)

bumblingbovine49 · 12/04/2018 10:59

I think if you only got these cravings in pregnancy then, it is possible that your body is craving the iron so checking iron levels seems sensible. I was a vegetarian for two years many eyars ago but around that time the cravings for meat got quite stroing. I gave in though and went back to eating meat.

However DH has been a non-meat eater for 20+ years (He used to be vegetarian until 2 years ago but now eats fish very occaionally) . He still gets meat cravings sometimes and looks longingly at the very occasional burger/steak I might order when we are in restaurants.

He has eaten meat exactly two times in that 20 years, both by accident and each time has said how good it tasted.

Once he was actually given meat in a curry a few years ago where the restaurant made a mistake and brought him lamb curry instead of the veg one he had ordered. He did actually taste the food as he didn't realise and thought the sauce tasted really really delicious. He had a couple of tastes but it wasn't until he actually picked up a piece of the meat that he realised so he sent it back. He was pretty sad actually as he said it had tasted fantastic. The restaurant were mortified, DH was just amused really, particularly by his own reaction.

The second time was in buger king when DS was eating meat (he is now vegetarian). We had ordered a meat burger and a vege burger . DH opened the wrong one and bit into the burger. His reaction at the time was, "this burger is the best burger I have had for ages" I was the one that time to say I thought he might have the wrong burger as he doesn't usually like many vege burgers generally, particulalry those frem McD and Burger King etc.

Anyway my point is that some vegetarians/non-meat eaters never lose the cravings completely, especially those who choise not to eat meat because of their concience etc rather tha because they find meat disgusting/don't like it etc.

Thundercatshoooo · 12/04/2018 11:00

You are probably low on iron. I think for the sake of your unborn child (and your own health) you could manage a bit of meat.

I craved broccoli and red meat all pregnancy, I wasn't anemic but I was quite low in iron. I didn't eat much red meat before I was pregnant either, once pregnant I couldn't get enough! I was worried I'd be anemic by the 28 week check so ate lots of leafy greens and red meat. I think there might be some truth in you crave what your body needs, well to some extent reading some of these!

LaContessaDiPlump · 12/04/2018 12:10

I think cravings are completely random. I was anaemic in my first pregnancy despite eating all the meat available, and fondly recall that one time that I got a massive craving for beer. That one tin of lager was delicious Grin

user1487175389 · 12/04/2018 12:18

Get some iron replacement going on and also try some ' fake meat' to substitute the taste/ texture you might be craving. I discovered a way to make dried soya chunks look and taste (a bit) like Chinese style pork the other day, if that helps? (Soak in veg stock, drain, coat in a mixture of soy sauce, red curry paste, vinegar, chili and chopped spring onions, fry until crisp) Smile

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/04/2018 12:20

You are probably low on iron. I think for the sake of your unborn child (and your own health) you could manage a bit of meat.

Not eating meat doesn't hurt an unborn child Hmm. As I've said, I think that if OP wants meat badly then she shouldn't feel guilty if she gives in, but there are lots of vegetarian ways to get more iron - even if she is anaemic (which we don't know!) it isn't somehow irresponsible or uncaring about her child to not eat meat.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/04/2018 12:21

suburban I think we're talking at cross purposes. I agree that while they were pregnant they were not vegan, and presumably wouldn't have described themselves as such (at most, I guess they'd have said 'I'm usually vegan but at the moment I'm eating meat and dairy'). But I think they were vegan again as soon as they stopped being pregnant and started eating vegan!

user1488204592 · 12/04/2018 12:24

Try the No Bull burgers from Iceland meant to taste like the real thing but are vegan.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 12/04/2018 12:30

Have you tried the spa tone drinks OP? They are recommended for pregnant ladies who aren't getting enough iron and if you drink them with orange juice they aren't too bad.

If I crave meat then it's usually because my iron is low ( not pregnant though!) so these usually sort me out.

TTCI · 12/04/2018 12:39

I also caved I was vegetarian for a year SadSad
