Morning sickness - when to go to hospital?

Before I start, want to make it clear that this pg is very much wanted and I'm more than happy to be sick 24/7 as long as I have a healthy baby at the end of it! The health of me and little one is my main concern...

Suffering from morning sickness and feel absolutely awful. Vomit within 20 mins of eating/drinking despite desperate attempts to keep it down for as long as possible in the hope I'll take some nutrients from it. DP thinks he knows it all and isn't really worried. Told me if I cut out fizzy drinks I'll stop being sick (one can of ginger beer when I'm feeling nauseous... ok!). Somehow don't think that will work. Stemetil not working. Now on metoclopramide which doesn't seem to be any better.

My question, how do you know when it's past the point of normal? I'm off work and rapidly running out of sick leave. Only 9+2. Doc was lovely and told me the first tri is nearly over and to hang on in. He just said head to hospital if you keep being sick but that seemed very vague... any ideas?

Thanks all in advance!

I am 14 weeks now and there has been a definite improvement. I’m hoping it’s not just down to the cocktail of medications I’m on. I hope you start to feel better soon. 9 weeks can be a peak time so hopefully this is the worst of it for you.

I was unable to keep fluids down so was hospitalised. My lips were bleeding as even a sip of water would make me heave. I had to be put on a drip. I was hospitalised twice during 7-13 weeks. My son is now 23 so things may have changed since then.

Thanks @hotchocolate86 - as long as I have a healthy baby at the end of it I'll be sick 20 times a day! Just want everything to be ok... very anxious mummy to be

Oh @tinytemper66 that sounds awful! But I bet worth it in the end. I'm searching for my light at the end of the tunnel!

I'd be going in then. Doctor said to go to a&e if you can't keep things down. Well you can't so call the receptionist and let them know you are going so your GP is aware.

I got sick with a tummy bug and got dehydrated. Once I had a drip I felt so so much better. I swear I was throwing up from the dehydration.

tinytemper66 · 09/04/2018 13:27

It was awful and just after I was beginning to feel healthy I ended up in hospital at 27 weeks with placenta praevia and had to stay in until he was born at 34 weeks.
What a palaver that pregnancy was!

BarryChuckle · 09/04/2018 13:27

Are you managing to keep water down op?

oneofthose · 09/04/2018 13:40

I'm in stoke too and was in the same position as you. 9 weeks is apparently the height of MS. I called 111 as I was being sick every 30 minutes and couldn't keep anything down. They said to go straight to A&E who tested my keytones and put me on an IV drip straightaway and gave me anti sickness tablets. I was in hospital 3 nights until I was well enough to go (I hate hospitals and was desperate to escape).
It was exactly a year ago now I'm sat with my baby asleep on my knee.
Don't leave it until you're really dehydrated before you go in!

DanaNakers · 09/04/2018 13:42

@BarryChuckle I keep it down for about 20 mins. My sickness isn't like a bug where I have to be sick immediately. I can hold it off for a short while but will always eventually be sick.

@oneofthose aww, lovely. You just made me feel a bit emotional!

Ps congratulations on the pregnancy

I was told if I hadn’t been able to urinate for six hours in the day I needed to go in. The last time I was in for andrip they insisted on measuring my ketone levels, I told them I couldn’t pee, they insisted I wait until indeed and finally, four hours later someone with that day’s duty neuron realised that the pregnant lady who couldn’t pee might just be dehydrated and a drip would be sensible...🤦🏻‍♀️

Ketones are more a marker of metabolic starvation than dehydration so even things like keeping a few tbsp of coke down can knock you out of ketosis. People also differ a lot in how ‘easily’ they produce ketones. Even at my worst levels of dehydration when I was very poorly I never went over 2+

I think you need to speak to your dad - it’s not sensible to wait the usual first trimester to tell people if you’re this sick - you need medical attention and that is that.

Anyone who tells you as a HCP that you’ll be fine if you keep little sips of water down needs to be told politely but very, very firmly that that is not acceptable to you and could they perform their job on tiny sips of water only? the answer is usually an ‘errr.. no’ followed by some actual treatment.

You need to be prepared for this to last another month or two (sorry) atcthe least. If you’ve lost 6lb already they need to know that. Unfortunately HCPs differ hugely in how they react to HG and you do need to be impeccably polite but extremely firm and push for treatment.

I’m now 20 weeks and it’s eased to the point I’m just having a vomit a few times a day - I have ondansetron but it only helped with the vomiting. I’m afraid nothing touched the nausea.

Anyway, please tell your dad - there’s no sense in not doing so

DanaNakers · 09/04/2018 14:01

Thanks @oneofthose

@Anatidae thank you for your advice. I would really love to tell him face to face which is why I have held off. He lives a long way away from me and he's like my best friend. I want to see his face when I tell him he's having his first grandchild!

Sounds like you might need to go in for fluids. You might just need a bag or 2 or you might need to stay in. They check your wee and your bloods. Where i am 3+ ketones got you admitted. You will start to feel better once you are dehydrated. They should also be making sure you are able to keep food and fluids down before letting you go home.
