Hiccups 34 Weeks Pregnant

I'm quite worried so I'm hoping for some reassurance Smile

Over the last few weeks, at least a few times a day baby will have a session of hiccups which feel quite strong.

I did the stupid thing of Googling and it said that I shouldn't be feeling this as much after 32 weeks, as this could be a sign of a problem with the umbilical cord?

Is there any truth to this?

Thank you!

I did the same ! Baby was fine but had hiccups all the way up to birth
Suffers from hiccups all the time now so I think was just a hiccups baby
I worried too and went to hospital twice to get checked due to it

I've never heard that (the problem with the umbilical cord thing). I do know though that DC 1 frequently had hiccups. He was breech, and I could see my whole stomach moving - it looked really funny, and I remember the midwife commenting on it in a smiley way. This was after 32 weeks (I remember one incident when I was witing for my scan to confirm he was breech, so about 36 weeks IIRC). Maybe the fact he was mal-positioned had something to do with feeling the frequency.
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but ask your midwife at your next check.

My now 7mo DS has hiccups daily up til birth, and is now a very hiccup-y baby!

When pregnant with DD she had reduced fluid, hospitalised from 29-36 weeks, constant monitoring etc. So I didn't feel any usual movement except her hiccups. The one day i didn't feel her hiccup after I was released from hospital I was straight back down again. It was the only way I knew she was in there &ok.

I'm 34 weeks and my little one gets hiccups a couple of times a day :) I haven't heard anything odd about this. Infact I'm actually a newborn photographer and when the newborns get hiccups parents often say to me 'they had hiccups all the time at the end of my pregnancy' so I think it's quite normal! :)

GrooovyLass · 09/04/2018 14:59

DD had hiccups daily before she was born. Still gets them regularly now at 18.

Apparently I had them a lot before I was born too and I'm pretty much plagued with them to this day!

I don't understand how unborn babies get hiccups though because aren't hiccups a little intake of breath?

Cat12321 · 09/04/2018 20:46

Thank you everyone! You've definitely put my mind at ease

@GrooovyLass I've no idea, actually! I'd never even thought of it. Madness Smile

I think it's the diaphragm spasming?

PhoenixDown · 10/04/2018 16:39

I'm a midwife and I've never heard of the thing relating to the umbilical cord either - I work on antenatal clinic alongside obstetricians and I've never heard one say that frequent hiccups are a problem.

I'm currently 33 weeks too and he has hiccups 3-4 times a day at least, and my daughter was the same right up till birth! They usually get them when I'm trying to sleep HmmGrin

FranticallyPeaceful · 10/04/2018 16:41

All three of mine have been little hiccupers right up to birth. I’m 33 weeks right now and he’s just finished his second hiccup session of the day, so far

amysaurus87 · 10/04/2018 17:02

39 weeks here and I have the same thing. Baby gets hiccups 2/3 times a day, usually if I'm hungry or after I've eaten! Been that way since I was 36 weeks, they stop if I move position.

I did the same as you, googled it and saw all the stuff about cord issues, asked my midwife and obstetric consultant and both said they'd never heard of that.

Oh, fun thing to do. Start noting down when baby hiccups. When baby is born see if hiccups occur at the same time. MW told me this when I was expecting DC4, who always had hiccups, even during labour, sure enough hiccups would happen at that time Grin

Afaik not medically trained but 5dc it's perfectly normal for them to have them until the end.
