Cold in early pregnancy?

Hi has anyone else had a cold early on? I feel like absolute shite to put it lightly. My throat is scratchy, sneezing, my head feels like I'm on a different planet. Also not sure if it has kick started nausea as I feel really nauseous too. Will it harm the baby being ill?

@Lmj25 I haven't, but a friend of mine had a sickness bug, high temp, vomiting for 2 days (not morning sickness), headache, couldn't eat, dehydrated. She's 30 weeks and baby is just fine! I think you'll be ok but you can always phone your midwife or local EPAU for advice if you feel you need reassurance.

Baby will be fine, don't worry. You can have paracetamol but stay away from cold and flu medicine. Vaporizers, 4head, honey and lemon in hot water and saline nasal spray is about all you can do other than sleep. Make sure you keep up with fluids. Feel better soon Flowers

I am 7 weeks and feel like I’m coming down with something, sore throat, headache. And the morning sickness has kicked in with a vengeance.

I had the same early on with ds, I remember being so ill and throwing up in the toilets at work because of a conbinarion of coughing and morning sickness that I was physically sent home by my colleagues.

I think it’s something to do with your immune system in early pregnancy? Perhaps lower than usual, but don’t quote me on that.

It won’t harm your baby, and you can take paracetamol to help, along with natural remedies like honey and lemon

I'm in the same boat, I'm on day three of feeling rotten and am just sleeping and trying to drink lots of lemon and ginger and eating little bits when I can...

It's miserable!

No it won’t harm the baby at all. General coughs and colds and winter vomiting don’t harm the baby (or we’d be extinct.)

Me too. Lots of sleep drinking lemon and ginger tea helps the sore throat. Just been for a little walk in the fresh air which has tired me out a bit but cleared my nose a little too.

@eminybob you are right about the lowered immune system. It has to be or it would recognise the baby as a foreign body and would try to expel it. It's also the reason why you're not meant to have foods like sushi or soft cheese - usually you would be able to fight off bugs like Listeria but with a lowered immune system it can cause much more damage.

Don't worry, I had the flu (twice!) during my first 3 months of pregnancy as it came on before I had a chance to get the jab. I was ill for 2 months solid and my baby is fine at 26 weeks Smile

Just sleep plenty and take paracetamol. I took the max paracetamol for almost those whole 2 months because I was so ill, but I also just tried to get as many vitamins in to my system as possible so I had smoothies, pregnacare tablets (still on these), vitamin C tablets that dissolve in water, fruit.... just need to boost yourself up as best you can!

Yup when I was around 10 weeks I had a really bad cold and was exhausted, nauseous, high temp, blocked nose etc

That then morphed into Strep throat so all I could do was gargle my aspirin, take paracetamol and suck on Jakemans and honey and lemon lockets.

Anything with a local anaesthetic is a nono in pregnancy.
