Summer nursing clothes - argh!

Ridiculously late to be thinking about this, I know (good old sleeplessness during the third trimester) but I've found finding summer clothes suitable for nursing so difficult. I guess I'm just trying to be prepared and maybe it's just not quite the right season to be finding this stuff yet... but everywhere I've looked still seems to be stocking things with long sleeves etc and I just want floaty things (tops and dresses) that I can easily breastfeed in, without just having to just live in those small vest tops.

Anyone have any recommendations on where I can find some things please? I'm reliving last early summer where we had a heatwave (well, by British standards) last June and it was the worst...

also reminds self to dig out the fan from the attic

My DD was born in that heatwave in the beginning of July - fecking hot hot hot it was in hospital- bring fan with you!!!!

To the point though - I think I saw some summery nursing dresses in h and m yesterday.

Most places are bringing out summer fashion now though. Have you looked at ASOS? They do nice maternity..

Congratulations btw

No idea if they still do them but I was handed down some plain, bold coloured, short sleeved tops originally from jojo maman Bebe which were great for the first few weeks especially. H&M also do nice nursing tops.

If you don't mind second-hand clothes, ebay is worth a look - although nursing clothes do get snapped up pretty quick! I've also found a few brand new, not worn items on there.

Kittypillar · 08/04/2018 02:14

Definitely not opposed to second hand, so I'll have a look on eBay. Will look at H&M, JoJo Maman and ASOS too. Didn't find much on the website for H&M but maybe I just wasn't looking properly...

Oh and thanks for the congrats @joeytribbiani :)

I just intend to stick a uniqlo summer vest under everything and wear normal clothes but sounds like that is what you want to avoid op
But I have always found nursing clothes too pregnancy like and meh.

Flyingchimps · 08/04/2018 03:38

JoJo mama Bebe have the dresses that you can use as maternity but also can be used for nursing too. I’m loving a few of my short sleeved ones from there right now as I’m already incredibly warm!!

If you're on Facebook there is a great group called can I breastfeed in it uk. Lots of good ideas and suggestions on there.

Mrscog · 08/04/2018 04:38

Just wear a normal vest top? I have spent the last 5 years breastfeeding and haven’t needed to buy any nursing clothes. Stretchy vests are your friend. Normally with a top layer over the vest. Vest goes down, top layer goes up. In very hot weather I took a floaty scarf with me to give some privacy whist feeding.

Seraphine has some nice floaty, lightweight nursing dresses in at the moment

I lived in these last summer. Really cheap and easy to dress up or down.

LunaLanolin11 · 08/04/2018 07:23

I agree with Mrscog, when I was nursing a couple of years ago I lived in the nursing vest tops with shorts or jeans. If it was a bit cooler I’d just pop a light cardigan on. I’m due again in the summer and I have the same plan. A lot of my friends actually just wore t-shirts and had a light scarf at hand for modesty. You don’t have to spend a lot of money.

I breast fed for years and never knew that there was such an entity as a Nursing ' clothes. Why not buy normal clothes that you like instead of being restricted by the small choice of clothes specified for that purpose. Any top that you can lift up will do worn with jeans/ skirts / shorts. Dresses can work of button through but they can leave you a bit exposed if you are feeding out and about so take that into consideration.

I’ve been keeping my eye out for things for a while now as well but want to avoid “nursing clothes” as such. I’ve been looking at lots of wrap dresses and tops that a friend of mine recommended as being useful to just loosen and pull to the side, and lightweight shirts, button-down dresses etc. I’m so sick of maternity wear I actually refuse to be stuck to nursing wear for the foreseeable future as well. Get me back in normal clothes!! I’ve found some lovely things in New Look, ASOS, Silk Fred, Boohoo for basic shirts... there are lots of things out there Smile

Kittypillar · 08/04/2018 10:17

I absolutely miss normal clothes so much!!! So maybe I'm resigning myself to more time out of them when I don't need to. Thanks for the tip on the Facebook group @PeachesandPie, that looks brilliant!

I've breastfed for 2.5 years overall so far and have 3 breastfeeding specific tops, the rest is normal clothes, don't look for actual nursing clothes at all. I live in lovely light tops/shirt dresses etc in summer with a vest top underneath if necessary if doing one up/one down.

RosieCotton · 08/04/2018 15:59

I got a beautiful dress from h&m a few years ago. It was a jersey cotton wrap dress it was so comfortable and super easy to feed in. I always love h&m feeding tops and dresses. Xx

Blondemother · 08/04/2018 20:25

I found my bump bands really handy for breastfeeding - stick under a normal top then whip top up to feed and tummy is covered and I didn’t feel too exposed.

QueenJane · 08/04/2018 20:28

You can wear anything you like, with a vest underneath. Lift top, pull down vest.

I never had nursing clothes, just did the above.
