Do we all get tested for gestational diabetes?

I'm 26 weeks today and am concerned about how big my bump is and how big I've got I was a small size 8 before pregnancy and weighed 10 stone and dread to think what I weigh 16 weeks on! I have a routine midwife appointment on the 11th so should I mention this to her or do they just check for it in urine? I'm so confused but so worried and if I do have it what has to change and what do I have to do to keep it managed?

Any woman of any shape size weight etc can develop GD so that's why Urine is tested at each midwife appointment. Yes some larger woman have a test between 26 and 30 weeks but so do many "ehm thinner ladies".

If you get a + on urine then you may get tested at different stages.

Waterfountain97 · 07/04/2018 12:02

This is me now at 26 weeks and I feel huge and everyone keeps telling me I'm huge so my nude wife next week will definitely get some sort of indication from my urine?

I got tested because my dad has diabetes, nothing to do with being fat thanks.

Waterfountain97 · 07/04/2018 12:03

I'm so sorry that made no sence 🙄 So my midwife next week will definitely get some sort of indication from my urine?

She'll measure your bump and if it's a lot bigger than expected she may send you for a growth scan and to get tested.

mintich · 07/04/2018 12:07

It's not just the larger ladies! I got sent for a test after one of my midwife appointments as there was sugar in my urine. I'd had a Twirl before going to the appointment 😂 It was all fine

pastabest · 07/04/2018 12:07

Yes you get your urine tested at every appointment for that reason.

There isn't anything particularly unusual about your bump though. If you normally wear clothing like in the pic then your bump is going to look bigger in comparison to other people at the same stage wearing maternity jeans and a floaty top instead.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 07/04/2018 12:09

Yes, they check your urine for sugars routinely. They also measure the fluid around baby if you are scanned. They check weight gain. If any of these indicate a risk of GD then they may get you tested.

Piglatin · 07/04/2018 12:09

You look fine to me

Classter · 07/04/2018 12:10

At my hospital you get called for a GTT if you have certain risk factors e.g. over 35, high BMI, history of type 2 diabetes, previous GD etc. Otherwise they just check your urine.

Shutupanddance1 · 07/04/2018 12:13

First of all - lots of ladies put on different amounts of weight during pregnancy - some put on 1 stone, 2 stone, 4 stone. It’s not a symptom of GD.

If it’s your first, it can definitely feel like you put on a lot as you haven’t maybe went through the body changes before. First pregnancy I put on 4 stone, this time round I’ve put on much less but my blood sugar levels are higher.

I’m 30 weeks and I don’t think you look very ‘big’. I would try not to be so harsh on yourself and enjoy your pregnancy.

Flomper · 07/04/2018 12:13

younlook normal to me. I was always booked for testing as soon as i replied thT my mum is diabetic when they asked about family history, nothing to do with me or my weight.

Dobbythesockelf · 07/04/2018 12:16

I have to get tested because there is a family history of type 2. My bump is also big but my midwife says that as long as it's not measuring too many weeks ahead then it is nothing to worry about.

LexieLulu · 07/04/2018 12:17

Your bump looks similar to mine (when I was pregnant). I got all the comments "sure there only one" etc.

Both my babies were born under 8lb (just).

Can I ask, how tall are you? I'm only 5'2" so I figured there was less space for my baby. Prob bullshit but it made me feel better

Waterfountain97 · 07/04/2018 12:17

My sister and mum had gd with their last pregnancys which I've only just found out about so obviously my midwife doesn't know this so I will mention it next week okay so they measure bump and test urine and they are normally the indicators if they come up obviously with results that show likeliness, thankyou ladies just wanted to know why they do before I go as my midwife last time didn't write down my weight at 23 weeks and that was a routine one she just wrote the weight of me at my booking in so I wanted to ensure I know what they are meant to do so I can pull her on it if she doesn't and yes these are clothes I normally wear I try leggings ect but I find my skin feels itchy with trousers on so hard dressing myself recently

Also I got tested for g.diabetes. Only time I had sugar in my wee was when I'd had coco pops just before 🙈

Waterfountain97 · 07/04/2018 12:21

@LexieLulu
I am about 5.3 I think 🤔 So yes rather short so maybe that's why I look bigger I'm just so sick of the comments from everyone

@Shutupanddance1
I definitely think it's because it's my first as I was small before and now I have a baby in there 😌 I feel huge

Flomper · 07/04/2018 12:37

you are short and are wearing very fitted clothes, thats why you look bigger im sure, dont worry. As soon as you mention at next midwife appt that your mum and sister had GD they will srramge a test. Then you'll know either wsy and can take steps accordingly. Be prepared that its quite likely you will have it if your mum and sister did, but nothing to worry unduly about, theyll monitor and you'll be encouraged to eat healthily i.e not stuff your face like most pg women myself included did Smile..

I know 3 women who had GD, all fine, sll very slim begore and after (one had previously been anorexic). I am chubby, before and after, and never had GD in any of my 4 pregnacies, despite the family history. Its nit clear cut who will get it i dont think.

wonderstar1216 · 07/04/2018 13:07

I got tested last time as I was drinking like a fish, anything I could get my hands on, non alcoholic of course.
I'm expecting it this time too as I have never felt so thirsty!

FancyNewBeesly · 07/04/2018 13:15

You really don’t look that big at all! I had twins and by your stage I looked absolutely bonkers already. Stop fretting, it’s fine :)

mintich · 07/04/2018 14:49

I'm short too and I got all the comments as my bump looked huge! People can be so rude.
My little girl came out at 8lbs 3.
Im now pregnant again, 13 weeks and already had a friend say I look about 6 months

Poptart4 · 07/04/2018 14:58

I get tested for GD because my mother has diabetes.

Your bump is fine, people are just assholes. I don't know any pregnant women who hasn't had people commenting on how big their bump is. Think about it you would never walk up to someone and tell them how fat their getting, I don't know why people think it's OK to insult pregnant women.

LeighaJ · 07/04/2018 16:08

Where I live it's standard to get a GTT at...28 weeks I think, so I thought it was standard throughout the UK?
