I want to steal someone else's baby name!

Ever since I was a child I've dreamt of calling my first baby this name. Fast forward 25 years and here I am with my first viable pregnancy. I still want to call my baby that name but my partner's best friend has a child with the same name. That child is now 10 years old.

I'm in two minds as to whether it would be acceptable to call my baby the same name. Even though the name we would use would be an abbreviated version that his best friend has never used for his child.

My partner likes the name but isn't that keen because he's worried what his best friend might think. I do think it's weird that we might choose the same name but at the same time I've wanted to call my child this since day dot.

The other thing is that we rarely see his best friend's child as his partner has agoraphobia and won't let anyone in her house either. So we never ever see her and the knock on effect is that we only see the child in passing on rare occasions.

What would you guys do? Stick with the dream name or try and find another that's second best?

Stick with the dream name. Why not? I know people with the same as my son. Could be lovely when the little boy meets a baby with the same name.

I don’t see an issue at all...it might be different if they had just had the child and you both named them the same but as the child is 10 years old now, I think it’s fine Smile

Absolutely 100% would use it Flowers

I don't think it's a problem at all! If I have a girl, I will give her the same name that 2 of my very close friends have used (exact same name, no possible short version!) but it's a name I love and picked out during my first pregnancy 11 years ago. I can't see it being a problem for anyone, especially since you don't see them much and there's such a big age gap between the children. Also, using the short version can make it sound like a different name if it's something like Eve/Evelyn or Katy/Catherine.
