High reading on the carbon monoxide test

Just had my booking in appointment. I scored a 5 on the carbon monoxide breath test which puts me as high. I'm a non-smoker. I don't spend any time with smokers at home or work. Midwife said it was probably from pollution due to working in the city centre - shocked me quite a bit! I don't suppose there's much I can do to reduce it?

Firstly any gas appliances in the house need checking.

gamerchick · 05/04/2018 15:40

itll be from pollution, especially if you’re in London. That’s why smoking threads are so boggling.

But yes get your house checked also. Aside from that theees not much you can do unless you want to hook up to oxygen while outside.

We had a service 2 weeks ago on the gas appliances, plus we have a a carbon monoxide detector. Not London but a large, heavily polluted city!

The same thing happened to me at my first appointment. I am a non smoker and had not been around any smokers. My midwife put the high reading down to driving down motorway on way to appointment with windows open. A couple months later she repeated the test and the reading was very low (I had walked to the clinic across fields so not near traffic)

strawberrysparkle · 05/04/2018 16:23

I had a reading of 8 and it was because I had been stuck in traffic on the way to the appointment. Next time I blew 0!

booandbumpp · 05/04/2018 16:43

I had this. Mine was 7! They tested my DP who scored a 2 so we knew it wasn't the house. And I work in a hospital. Midwife said it was probably from walking through City Centre (I work in Sheffield) and also being on a bus which shocked me too!!

lifechangesforever · 05/04/2018 16:46

Where do you live? I work in Leeds City Centre and didn't get a high reading. I'd definitely be checking everything in your house too.

What did the midwife say should be done next?

usernotfound0000 · 05/04/2018 17:36

I live just outside Leeds, work in the centre, drove to the doctors on the motorway and had the window open. She said they'll test again in a few months, she wasn't concerned but just said it was higher than she'd expect for a non-smoker. I just hope she doesn't think I'm lying!

Don't worry if you were a smoker you would be scoring loads higher!

Pinkvoid · 05/04/2018 18:44

I work in Leeds city centre too and scored 6 in my last pregnancy. I explained I’ve never smoked and have a regular gas check plus carbon monoxide alarm. She reassured me it was most likely pollution especially since I visit London a few times a year and had recently returned. I still received smoking cessation leaflets through the post though Hmm.

FranticallyPeaceful · 05/04/2018 19:23

I was 0 but when I was asking about it I was told just driving to the appointment could give you a reading

ZERF · 05/04/2018 19:53

I've never been tested?!

Never heard of this, is it standard?

Very polluted air round here apparently.

pullthecracker · 05/04/2018 20:14

I’m a midwife, in our carbon monoxide training, they said that if you’ve not had much to drink that day, it increases your reading. When you see people with readings of 28, I wouldn’t be concerned about 5 .

verybookish · 05/04/2018 20:21

I had a reading of 12! Non smoker, all gas appliances ch caked and multiple detectors at home. It was put down to pollution (before the appointment I walked for about 3 hours around central London). However, some nhs trusts have it as fa darf to ask the woman if she is lactose intolerant (which I am) which can produce very high readings. Though my midwives did not seem to know about this.

verybookish · 05/04/2018 20:21

Gah! Sorry for typos!

usernotfound0000 · 05/04/2018 20:56

Zerf it's apparently standard now, but I didn't have it in my first pregnancy 3 years ago, it used to just be smokers but now it's everyone.

When do they do it? I'm almost 35 weeks so feel a tad late!

usernotfound0000 · 06/04/2018 08:09

I had it at my booking in and the midwife said it will be repeated around 30 weeks.
