PCOS and Gestational Diabetes

Just looking for experiences really.

I'm 24 weeks pregnant and a FTM and I'm a little worried about the whole idea of Gestational Diabetes... I'm not in a massive panic about it but the idea of a big baby when I am only small and petite is fairly scary.

I have an appointment with my midwife on Monday and the test is something that has not been mentioned. Will this be something that takes place then or will I have to book it in for a different time?

I was not overweight when I became pregnant and I would say I have eaten healthy throughout pregnancy but I did struggle to conceive and struggle with insulin resistant due to my PCOS (Which is really the only thing that makes me just want to prepare).

Don't think I have put on much weight other than my bump so I don't believe I have it... (Writing this post now seems a little pointless? Halo )

Just worried about logistics I think is all ... I'm only 5ft and petite does anyone have experience with being small and having GD and any labour stories?

Thanks!

Mmmmm I am 19+5 weeks pregnant, haven't put on hardly any weight, still using my ordinary clothes and have been declared as having gestational diabetes. You don't put on weight, your baby does. Weren't you given the tests in your second trimester?

Sorry to hear that.

I know that weight gain isn't a sign of GD per say ... I was mainly pointing out I was a healthy weight to begin with and still am.

I also know that it can effect anyone. I am still in my second trimester. Have not seen midwife since 16 weeks where she didn't test for it.

I know the baby is the one at risk of becoming big with it... are you now being monitored?

GD testing normally happens around 28 weeks unless a positive urine sample and your midwife phones the hospital for an urgent test to be done.

I have PCOS too, this is second pregnancy for me and I'm watched for GD this time round as I've been getting really bad sugar level drops at night.

I am Glasgow though so different trusts do different things- I'm 50kg lighter this time round and first pregnancy I was clear of GD so hopefully this time round I'm clear too.

Good luck!

I was slim in my last pregnancy and still had GD, which surprised me. It was easily controlled with diet and baby was quite small. Because I had it last time, this time i'm being tested at 16 and 28 (i think) weeks. It wouldn't be done at the appointment on Monday. In our area it's fast from the night before, get down early to have blood test and drink, then wait 2 hours for another blood test.

I am on a diet and once a week I test to make sure alls OK. Baby is fine. No positive glucose in urine test ever. I had the glucose tolerance test which came out high and then that three hour one where they test you four times. Yuk. First two numbers were borderline the 3rd one normal, but they are not taking any chances!

Oh good luck gryffen! Hope it stays that way!

sonypony, that is a relief then that your baby was still a good weight/size! Right then I'll mention my concerns to her on Monday then... and just wait for the test. Hopefully all will be well.

Sounds like you have a really good handle on it then SVRT! Thank you for your positive experiences!

They don't always do the GTT- I went for it due to family history and it had to be booked at the hospital. Took over two hours. Happened at 28 weeks but got booked in at 24 weeks (she should have booked me in earlier but forgot, so might be worth asking your midwife outright if you need it and explaining your concerns RE: PCOS).
